What people who have never played the game, or any sports for that matter, is that even though you TRY, some nights are not your night. And it can go both ways as well. You can be as lucky as sh*t and get 4 pts even though you had 4 mins of ice time, and it was your linemates that were ripping it up and you happened to get a 2nd assist. As for goalies, luck can make you look REAL good. Of course, it all can balance out, but that is why I am so annoyed at people who love Lu/Sedins one night, and rip him/them apart the next. All in all, the Canucks have had a brilliant, record setting season at this point. Within the regular season records, and so far their great playoff run, they had speed bumps along the way.. You are not going to go 82-0 in the regular season, nor are you going to go 16-0 in the playoffs.
Especially now in the latter rounds of the playoffs, series' are expected to go 6-7 games. You are at a point where you are playing against a team that is basically a mirror image of yourself in terms of stats and winning ability. The best team in each series has ONE goal in mind, and that is to win 4 games before they lose 4 games.
Lastly, I believe Canuck "fans" take their team for granted. If you ask any fan whether they would accept a 7 game series win and a 6 game series win in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs, they will all say "hell ya!"... If you ask them if they would take a 2-1 lead in the WCF, no one would turn that down. The Nucks are 2 games away from making it to the big show... and will have had to lose 4 out of 5 to be knocked out by San Jose. Besides Detroit and Nj and a couple of other teams, it is very rare a team to get to the WCF and SCF year after year. So I think we should all be a bit more appreciative of the Canucks success. Yes, I want them to win it all, but I sure don't EXPECT them to win it. The reality is, it is so hard for any team to win the cup, let alone get to the WCF. I am just happy they are where they are now...
I can't thank this post enough times.
"As for goalies, luck can make you look REAL good."
And the opposite is true as well - just look at some of the weird stuff that got by Lu in the second round: over the net, bounced off Edler's arm and in... or a pass from BEHIND the goal line that went off a stick, off Lu's stick, off his leg, and in... and people are giving him crap because he didn't have those. WTF?

The posters over at HFboards were joking that it'll be Alberts and Tanev for Game 2 over Ballard. ****, makes you wonder if Ballard nailed AV's wife or something.

Like another member posted. When is the last time Luongo stole a game for us? He is getting paid $10million and has yet to perform out right crazy. ie. crawford in first round and rinne in second round had numerous lights out performances, whereas if it weren't for the guys infront of Lu we would have been out a long time ago imo.
I definitely do not take our team for granted. I honestly have a surge of emotions since I don't really remember the 94 cup run since I was too young to appreciate it. I LOVE the Canucks as do many Vancouverites. But, Luongo has been good in these playoff's. I would not say he has been outright spectacular.

^ I really hope they got approval by the NHL before they spent money on that. And I really hope if they didn't, they won't get a fine
i was thinking about this yesterday and i honestly wonder if alberts will be put in. one of our key advantages this series is defensive mobility. alberts is a big guy and a good dman but i'm not sure if he can keep up with the pace at this level. that being said, i wouldn't be surprised to see alberts and ballard slide in for rome and ehrhoff.
this team has dealt with injuries on the back end all year long, this is nothing new to them!
Alberts made some huge improvements in the off-season with respect to his mobility. When he did play this season, he was able to move the puck when it was in the corners. He is also a better hitter than Rome.
I'm actually concerned about Sami Salo. He is still very crafty, but his inability to turn is really putting us in a bind, especially if we lose battles on pinches in the offensive zone.

It's the nature of the beast, the position of goaltending... Comes with the territory.. I can't remember the last time I blamed a goalie for losing a hockey game for us...Nor do I remember the last time I was blamed, as goalie, for losing a game for my team. Player's will never blame a goalie for losing, like fans do.

Kinda makes me wonder if Vancouver fans were more supportive of the goalies during the 95 to 2006 years we wouldn't have had such a turnover in goalies coming and going.

Just because no one blames you for the loss does not mean you didn't play poorly.
I've played a few times where the goalie let in terrible goals and clearly lost the game for our team, but no one says anything to the goalie.
It's easy to say the defense played poorly or offense didn't play well because they're a unit and you're not singling anyone out per se. But, as a goalie it's only you. So it is extremely rare for someone to say the goalie was weak. People generally feel bad for singling players out.. Unless you're JR.
Thats true. The goalie is the only person on the team (unless you're freaking lucky) that can't contribute to adding goals for your team on the scoreboard.

Anyone still have the Third Red Skate jersey, besides me? lol
I still have two, one gamer and one retail 550. I just sold my Bure replica a couple days ago. Getting another gamer when the team comes back after game 4.

So what if Luongo is getting paid 10million this season, if Niemi made 15 Million would that make it ok for Luongo to lose to him? Hell if Luongo made 1 Million a season the city of Vancouver would still be all over him. Unless your the Aquilinis, it shouldnt matter to anyone how much a player makes. Its all about performance and Luongo in my mind has been playing well this playoff, a couple bad games here and there but hes had 2 Shutouts, and a bunch of 1-2 goal games. What more can u ask for? It seems like unless Luongo gets a shutout, hes not the reason why they won the game. And if we lose, hes the #1 reason why we lost.

if you've ever played goal, you would have a new found appreciation for the position
Playing goal is fucking hard. With all those pads on you never know where the puck is in a scramble, and when shit gets busy in front of you it's very tiring. Theres a reason why theres only a handful of elite goalies out there. Posted via RS Mobile
The problem with goalies in Vancouver is that we've had two examples of goalies who played epically in the playoffs: Captain Kirk and to a lesser extent, King Richard. We have seen goalies steal games for us in the playoffs (e.g. McLean in Game 1 in the finals) and until we see that in Luongo, he will never be respected.
Holy smokes, the banner hanging on the control tower is massive...

You shouldn't need a goalie to constantly steal you games... Lu did it one year for the Canucks, but we still lost.. I rather have what we have now... a solid 1-4 line and 2-3 defense pairings, and a goalie that is just solid and not necessarily a game stealer..
Look how far the Preds got with a game stealing goalie...
i wish "fans" would understand how insignificant the number $10 million is in the grand scheme of things. unless his cap hit is $10 million for 12 years, your argument using this number is completely and utterly useless.
