In all fairness, 6pm start means 9pm for fans in Boston and Tampa which potentially means games don't end til midnight. While fans will definitely stay up, it's also bad for television. |
I was actually hoping there would be a noon Eastern game.. That way it starts at midnight for me :) I don't mind watching hockey at 8 or 9am, but I definitely prefer to watch it at the end of the day instead of first thing in the morning! |

Weve been waiting 17 years for this moment to happen. Ive watched like many others in this city has watched over 300-600 games over that time and were gonna potentially miss it cause of east fans who probably have only watched 3-5 games a season? Wtf is up with that. Those diehard bruin fans would have no problem stayimg up late so we r catering to the semi-casual fan. Posted via RS Mobile |
k so if the game 5 is fri june 10, I need to find someone to go with that is willing to spend 4-500 on tix (if I can even find something that low) |

My boss is a huge fan and will definitely be watching... suffice to say he'll have no problem if we want to book off a little early too. Helps for him, of course, that he works out of a home office... |

5pm PST/8pm EST start time, would mean that ideally the games would be over sometime between 10pm-10:30pm EST (with no OT), allowing for NBC's local affiliates to still get at least 30mins of their affiliate's local late night news program aired, which is key for affiliates ad revenue. The usual nightly local news programs in the US are 10pm to 11pm. NBC and NHL also want the key 8pm to 10pm time slot for Nielsen TV ratings to sell to and please advertisers. The 5pm PST/8pm EST is scheduled not to please the hardcore true hockey fans, its to try to capture the general public and non hockey fans, hoping that when they sit down to watch prime time tv that they would flip past and give watching hockey a chance and boost the Nielsen figures. Television ratings numbers also drop dramatically after 10pm. One of the key reasons the NFL is so successful is because of their lucrative television contracts, in order for the NHL to be successful, they must grow their audience in the US to generate more ratings to appeal to advertisers who in turn will get the television networks to carry more NHL games. I'm personally ok with the 5pm start times, mostly because I'll be at the bars drinking at 1pm every game day anyways lol. |
