ST. JOHN'S CITY COUNCIL APPROVES AHL RETURN TO NEWFOUNDLAND

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- City council in St. John's, N.L., has unanimously approved in principle a lease agreement that will bring professional hockey back to the city.

Former premier Danny Williams announced earlier this week that he had reached a tentative lease agreement with St. John's Sports and Entertainment, which oversees the Mile One Centre.

He also announced an agreement in principle with True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Manitoba Moose, to relocate the American Hockey league team to St. John's.

The city will have no ownership stake in the team and the deal will keep a landlord-tenant relationship between SJSE and the team.

The team will pay a fixed rate to the city for the stadium -- regardless of attendance -- for three years and an agreement has been reached regarding revenue sharing on food and beverage sales at Mile One.

Full financial details will not be disclosed until the league signs off on the move and a final deal is approved.

There's a pretty interesting list of non-Canadian Hollywood celebrities flying in for the game tomorrow, the NHL's growth in the US is certainly improving, even US TV #s for game 1 was impressive especially considering one of the teams is Canadian.

It's too bad Victoria just got a lame WHL team. If we had AHL it would a be a great locaiton for the Canucks affiliate.

not really. there aren't enough people in victoria to support an ahl team imo.

I think Chicago Wolves were the only AHL team that did not have a NHL affilate....as long as we dont go there

I know wearing it in public is emberassing and shit but what if someone had a signed fake hanging in a case with only the numbers shown signed?
