I think this is a double edged sword here, horton taunted rome earlier, and rome foolishy reacted with a big hit. 4 Game suspension is ridiculous, just shows how buddy buddy the bruins are with the NHL commity. And theres replays of horton trying to get up a few moments after while being forced down by the medical staff.. These guys are pro athletes that take big hits all the time, yet they are treating them like babies..
It was Thornton taunting Rome, not Horton.
Horton was badly injured, regardless if he was capable of moving.
Didn't meant he would have able to stand on his own had medical staff actually let him get up.

More NHL rulings based on results rather than intent.
Eager had every intention of hurting Daniel but Daniel got up.
Rome isn't a dirty player. He hit Horton late but I didn't think it was blindside. Horton was admiring his pass. Rome just stood him up. Intention is debatable.
The trash aftermath on the road is disgusting. Why can't people clean up after themselves?
Pretty simple answer for this one... if you're standing there watching the game in a huge crowd with a drink in your hand, what do you do with it after you're done with it? You're surrounded by people, you can't leave or else your spot might be taken... and there are no garbage cans anywhere close by. Do you hold on to it for the next 2+ hours? I was there for the street party on Saturday... after I was done with my drink, I wanted to throw it into a garbage can... but it just wasn't happening. I put it down on the ground beside me, but obviously once you start celebrating, it gets kicked around and it's out of sight, out of mind...
Also, the garbage cans are overflowing 10 minutes into any downtown celebration. Sometimes people don't want to litter but because they have no where to put it and because it's so hard to move downtown, they just throw it on the floor.
...other people just litter just because but I'm just saying.
I can't explain why Torres' hit on Seabrook was not deemed worth a suspension, but Rome's hit on Horton is worth four games.
Both were interference calls that were not blindside hits that resulted in a concussion.
Wow, I'm surprised nobody actually brought up this exact point yet.
I would LOVE to hear Murphy's explanation on this one.
it would be easy for him to just say those hits were before his time and that moving forward things will be different. the major flaw in a statement like that would be that you don't set a fucking precedent in the middle of a stanley cup final. if any boston fan wants to argue about this they need to be reminded of what chara did to pacioretty and the league's response to that hit.
what i dont understand is in the dvd they released of good hits to inform teams of what will be called and what wont be called, they had many scott stevens hits classified as legal.
after that stevens hit kariya even said its his fault for not having his head up. maybe from the other angle it would seem more siimilar to the stevens hit. personally i think the 2 are similar except rome kinda jumped at the last second. which i think would have warranted 1-2 games. oh well id rather have ballard/tanev in over rome
the NHL disciplinary shitheads really need to think about this, had Horton never been injured would they still hand out a 4 gamer in the SCF, yet alone regular season?
Horton's head hitting the ice is what caused his concussion ffs

Maybe... except he also says "Most of what I know and what I decided on today I've learned from Colin Campbell."
The whole hitting thing is getting fucking stupid. Even if you hit a guy cleanly these days and the guy gets knocked out everyone is up in arms saying it was a dirty play. The difference between a clean hit and a dirty one is a fraction of a second.
The Scott Stevens hit these days would definitely get you 5+ games at least, regardless of what the NHL says is "legal". The grey area is way too big right now, and eventually no one is going to bother trying to go for the big hit because it's not worth the hassle.

The Torres hit on Seabrook was not a suspension because as Colin Campbell suggested:
Quote:
"When Rule 48 [Illegal Check to the Head] was unanimously adopted by the general managers in March 2010, there was no intention to make this type of shoulder hit to the head illegal,” Campbell stated. “In fact, at that time, we distributed a video to all players and teams that showed a similar hit on a defenseman by an attacking forward coming from the opposite direction behind the net and stated that this is a 'legal play
What I don't like about the Rome suspension is that Murphy didn't punish the hit, he based it on the injury. As others have mentioned, Eager's hit on Sedin, if Sedin got carted off, Eager as a repeat offender would probably get like 15 games, but Sedin got right back up. If Horton had gotten up, it would have been 2 mins at most.

john shorthouse made a comment today that i really agree with.
players know that 9/10 times when they hit a guy he won't get hurt and since the league is only suspending based on the aftermath, the hits will continue to come.
I eat my words, I listened to the statement in the car on the way home.
The argument is weakened. Not a blindside but a late hit.
suspended due to the aftermath
and yes the Stevens hit on Kariya in the early 2000s will most DEFINITELY get someone suspended by today's standards
Imagine this. What if Scott Stevens played today with the technology on gear. Could be worst. Scott Stevens hits are like..say a 18wheeler comin onto u at full speed.
I REALLY REALLY HOPE SHANNY DOES THE RIGHT THING NEXT SEASON. Shanny's a smart hockey man. I trust him to do everyone in the league some good deeds
I still think the hit was fair. It was open ice, the player wasnt looking where he was skating (admiring his pass) and got caught. Rome isn't a head hunter.
All hockey players since first stepping onto the ice at a young age, were taught to keep your head up.
I dunno, 4 games suspension for a clean hit, that caused a concussion.

and instead of a using a video clip, how about a still image?
clearly contact is established BEFORE this picture, yet both of his feet are on the ice, weird!
Argue all you want about the suspension, how dirty the nucks are, etc. but if you think 4 games is a fair suspension your day dreaming
also, it's one thing to try and set a new precedent to protect players BUT
A) you do not do it during the 3rd game of the cup finals
B) If this is infact the new precedent, you sure as hell better be consistent with punishment from here on it, or else the 4 games is even more outrageous
there has never been a point until the discipline hearing today where the NHL office has come out and blatantly said that the resulting injury played into the amount of the for the suspension
Any Hockey fan regardless of bias should at least take note of these events, as it is a fucking complete joke how it was handled
not to mention Chris Kelly or w/e his name is coming out and openly saying that he sought out help on the issue from BRIAN BURKE of all people? are you fucking kidding me? consulting a GM that has a huge past with the team in question, as well as a frosty relationship with Mike Gillis and a toxic relationship with Canucks ownership?
what fucking joke, i couldnt care less about Rome, he's replaceable, but the way this was all handled..

now i want to see a frame by frame of Scott Stevens on Paul Kariya
pretty much the same fucking thing
whatever, the whole thing is settled. I think the Canucks can appeal. Guess the current diciplinary team wanted to make a splash b4 they get replaced. Pieces of shit

Colin Cambells 'behind the net' comment on the torres hit was to point out that even tho it was an east-west hit, behind the net is still considered north-south. meaning even tho torres was skating from one side of the ice to the other, he hit him from the front, not from the side.
i believe under 48, hitting someone from the side (across the regular flow of play) is considered blindsiding. behind the net is not considered blindside.
Rome should sue the NHL for McGinn not being suspended for that hit on him. Rome's not able to play anymore - he might as well do something for himself stir the pot.
