That's because your bone-headed GM (and I mean that in the nicest way; no disrepect to you personally) has no assets in the cupboard to play with.

Here's a brief and painful analysis of the Flames from the former sports writer for the Herald, Eric Duhatschek:

Calgary Flames

Game plan: General manager Darryl Sutter’s pattern is to make a splash at every entry draft – Jay Bouwmeester arrived last year, Michael Cammalleri the year before – but he is desperately short of trade bait, given how he gave away Dion Phaneuf and has no first- or second-round choice Friday, as a result of previous trades. Sutter’s machinations always provide great theatre; and his tendency to take on contracts deemed too expensive by other teams means his cell phone batteries will get a work out from hopeful teams looking to dump salary. Calgary needs a back-up goalie; more scoring; a bona fide No. 1 centre; and faces salary-cap issues. Short of mortgaging the future even further by peddling next year’s top pick, the Flames’ options are limited. They look poised for that slow steady decline into mediocrity – if they aren’t there already.

Missing picks: 1st round, 13th overall (to Phoenix for Olli Jokinen); 2nd round, 43rd overall (optional to Chicago for Rene Bourque); 3rd round, 73rd overall (optional to Edmonton for Steve Staois).

Extra picks: 3rd round, 64th overall (from Columbus for Anton Stralman).

That is way too much for Versteeg. Raymond and Versteeg are similar in terms of development, skill set and age, although Raymond is quicker IMO. Adding in a 1st round pick is a gross overpayment

LUUUUUUUU 06-25-2010 02:56 PM

looks like we got Ballard for Bernier

Official: Source was correct, Ballard to Van for 25th pick and Bernier. less than a minute ago via web

Yah seems like a lot of people are reporting it is a done deal pretty much.

If it is Ballard for Bernier and 1st, I could definitely live with that. Bernier is obviously expendable with the depth of wingers we have in our system, and it gets his 2 million salary off the table.

4.2 million is quite high for Ballard, and it is long term, becoming our highest paid D-Man I believe? But if he pans out in Vancouver, it will be well worth it as he is just reaching his prime.

LUUUUUUUU 06-25-2010 02:59 PM

It would be foolish if Gillis doesn't also get a pick in return, at least a 3rd rounder.

LUUUUUUUU 06-25-2010 03:09 PM

NOOOOOOO

Pierre LeBrun Real_ESPNLeBrun

Florida trades Keith Ballard and prospect Victor Oreskovich to Vancouver for Steve Bernier, Michael Grabner and Canucks' 1st-round pick

Real_ESPNLeBrun

However, am told the trade is conditional on a player Vancouver wanting not being avaialble at 25th overall... 4 minutes ago via web
