I guess it shows. Mellow captains are never good captains.
"Lead by (on-ice) example" isn't enough.

I think Schneider deserves to start, but I guess AV doesn't want to shatter Lu's confidence.

Yzerman? Sakic? Lidstrom?

spoon.ek9 10-20-2010 09:59 AM

i wouldn't really say lack of leadership, just the wrong reaction to the situation by henrik i suppose. rypien hasn't been effective in any of the games he has played so far and i guess his frustration boiled over and he made a stupid decision. i agree with the indefinite suspension by the league, fans should never be attacked.

I guess so. Just seems funny Henrik didn't feel like being involved in that.
Would any of those captains have walked away as well?

Hondaracer 10-20-2010 10:37 AM

To be a good captain do you have to do up other team mates skates as well?

He doesn't need to be involved in petty shit like that

Here we go again with "swedes are not good enough to be captain"..its the naslund argument all over again..haha

trancehead 10-20-2010 11:01 AM

LOL i just re watched the rypien clip. Henrik just bounces...

Im all up for him being Captain but that was not a way for him to usher in the new captaincy

lacubrious1 10-20-2010 11:28 AM

Sounds like lu is starting. I think AV shoulda went with schnieder. Dont' think it won't shatter lu's confidence, but actually get him going. Lu's a competitor and obviously wants to play, having him watch some kid try to take his spot might light a fire in him.

rsx 10-20-2010 11:50 AM

No one really knows what's going on in the locker room and to judge his captaincy based on that one incident is ridiculous.

Hondaracer 10-20-2010 11:53 AM

I'm sure Lu always wants to face CHI

Those players may have been quiet, but they all had presence. All one of them had to do in that situation was to stand up and maybe put a hand on the player and say, "No, don't" or just look at the player in the eyes. Doing absolutely nothing and moving away from the situation is not cool.

In any case, who cares? If leaderdship is an issue with the Canucks, they'll work it out. With the amount of talent on that team, a good leader might be all you need to take them to the next level. A coach can only do so much. A player who takes the bull by the horn, so to speak is what you want. Anyone like that on the Canucks roster?

Linden was an awesome captain over the years. A lot of the younger players looked up to him - respect. He was a mentor with lots of experience in the latter years, but in the early years, he displayed great leadership, too. Hard to put a finger on it - what great leadership is all about.

Not saying he is on the same level of presence as the ones listed, but Henrik did do that but Rypien shoved him out of the way.

Yzerman

iwantaskyline 10-20-2010 01:08 PM

By the time Henrik even noticed the situation Manny had it under control and Rypien was getting a lashing from AV telling him to fuck off. But I love what Bieksa did, bitched at the fan and slammed his stick at the glass lol.

On a side note, I freaking hate Luongo. Every goal he lets in he looks like he's been shot. He either stares off into space or lies there for a good 2-3 seconds like his teammates just let him down. It's not very inspring to watch or for his teammates. He needs to be like every other goalie and clear his crease and drink his god damn gatorade.

Just got off the phone with 28-year-old James Engquist from Mendota Heights. He is the fan who Canucks forward Rick Rypien grabbed last night as he was leaving the ice. Rypien has since been suspended pending an in-person hearing with the NHL (believed to be Friday), meaning he will likely receive a hefty suspension.

Engquist attended the Wild-Vancouver game with his brother, Peter, getting seats directly behind the visitors' bench as a gift from their father: "I was just standing straight up applauding as he was getting kicked out. He was out of control. And then I said, 'Way to be professional,' and he obviously didn’t care for that comment and decided to grab me and almost dragged me over the rail. If my brother wasn’t grabbing me and the other player wasn't grabbing him, he probably would have dragged me over the edge."

Engquist did not hear from the NHL brass as of 4:30 p.m. CT, however he called the Xcel Energy Center operations department and they put him in touch with NHL Security. He gave a statement a little bit ago.

"This is a crazy incident. I’ve seen a lot of hockey in my day, and I’ve never seen someone actually come into the stands and assault a fan," said Engquist.

Engquist said he is "definitely seeking legal representation. ... I was assaulted, that's just the bottom line."

Engquist said he didn't receive an apology from the league, Rypien or the Canucks. He said he hasn't heard anything from the Wild.

Fuck, Rypien is fucked.

punkwax 10-20-2010 02:10 PM

What a joke. Did Rypien “come into the stands“? No. Reached into them, sure. Was this guy afraid for his well being? Didn't seem like it when he was high-fiving his way to the front row.

This guy needs to really be assaulted now so he understands the difference.

I hate obvious sue-happy American cash grabs like this.

I still don't know if this is a urban myth or not but didn't Rypien get into a fight at some bar in Calgary and get charged and that was the reason he was out for so long couple seasons ago?

b0unce. [?] 10-20-2010 02:14 PM

damn, literally every sports network has rypien's story plastered across their page.
sucks this happened :( but i mean, no one has heard rypien's side of the story... i guess its just that heat of the moment, you lose your cool and just snap. the fan could have said more than 'way to be professional'... who knows.

I'm not a big Bieksa fan but I like how he slammed his stick on the glass as well, it shows that he will defend his teammates no matter what and risk getting punished himself.

Yup, it sucks...even ESPN had it as one of their headline stories. I'm sure the NHL will come down hard on Rypien and Rypien and the Canucks might be subject to a lawsuit by the fan seeing how in the US you can sue for about anything.

punkwax 10-20-2010 02:19 PM

I want Bieksa to beat someone into a puddle and restore some faith around here.

Looking at the video again, in addition to Malholtra, Kesler and Bieksa were right in the thick of things too. Guys that really stand up for their teammates.

DanHibiki 10-20-2010 02:29 PM

Are you kidding me that kid is suing???? For that???? Maybe if he got punched or hurt in some way but come on! He better not win. What a joke these people are.
