gotta look at it this way, theres so much grit+speed on that third line that when the plays goes on the offense with these guys, goals are bound to be scored. Its why checking lines can sometimes be the big difference in a heated playoff series.

anytime you get a guy like torres or malhotra pop in a goal means they were rewarded for their efforts in shutting down the opposition. Offensive upsides is a plus

Luongo has more points than Desbiens. In less games played.

There's a mess in the Garden State, and it has more to do with the mega contract the Devils doled out to Ilya Kovalchuk in the offseason than it does with their head coach John MacLean.

At least that's what Bobby Holik believes. In an interview on Off The Record, the recently retired 18-year NHL veteran, who played 11 of those seasons in New Jersey, said he doesn't believe MacLean is all to blame for the team's woeful start.

"I think he's in a very tough spot," Holik said. "Maybe I called for some coaches to be fired from the past. I would not … not comment on (if I would fire him). He was put in a tough spot by management signing Ilya Kovalchuk for such a long term deal."

After Monday's 3-0 loss to Vancouver, the Devils sit dead last in the NHL with just seven points on the season. They have won just three of 13 games this year.

Kovalchuk has just three goals and three assists so far this season, and he was a healthy scratch on Oct. 23 against Buffalo. Kovalchuk signed a 15-year contract with the Devils this offseason for $100 million.

Holik also doesn't think longtime Devils' GM Lou Lamoriello - who won two Stanley Cups with Holik on the roster - would make such a long-term commitment to a player.

"I don't know if it was all Lou's doing, times (are) changing … he may have a little less say about what direction the organization is going," Holik told Off The Record. "And obviously they are trying ... they are still in the process of going in a different direction."

In a recent radio interview, Holik ripped Kovalchuk after he was late for a meeting with the Devils, and questioned why New Jersey would commit itself to such a contract for the Russian winger.

Bobby Holik should know, he's an expert on being overrated and overpaid.

He got paid more than Forsberg and Yzerman to name a few in the 02-03 season. Mike Gillis is a genius haha

As much as i'm excited about Tores' hat trick, I think his biggest play was his hit on Cogliano

Which in context was: With one goal lead, Oilers with extra attacker, puck pinned in our zone. Tores digs out the puck in a scrum with a huge hit on Cogliano. Result - period ended on Oiler zone. (The significance for the bigger picture being - it was a bloody marvelous play for a team that at that moment that struggled to maintain a 3 goal cushion).

Happy with the hat trick but I don't know if people will catch that the above play was just as huge as scoring an empty netter.

LsquareD 11-03-2010 04:28 AM

anyone got the vid of the hit?

Hondaracer 11-03-2010 06:27 AM

Gotta be more hits like that against teams like Edmonton, small players won't go into dirty areas if you have 3-4 of those a night

that hit was the best of the night i'd say. torres!

6thGear. 11-03-2010 12:03 PM

That's exactly what torres was brought in to do. Funny how some people thought he wasn't a significant signing in the offseason and how he was already being bashed in the preseason...

Two games don't mean anything, especially for a player like him. He gets hot for a few games then goes the next ten without registering a point. Ask any Buffalo or Columbus fan.

but his first task is NOT to score goals, theres a decent top 6 to do this
his task is to be the 3rd line checker that will line up with a top line on any given night

Ikkaku 11-03-2010 12:56 PM

^ As long as he keeps up with being physical and occasionally generating some offence, it's what most people expect out of him.

murd0c 11-03-2010 01:10 PM

Its great to see a 3rd line finally putting points up. I can't wait until the first two start clicking.

his career high is 27 goals, last year he had 19

i'll take him over useless sack of shit demitra any day, he's at 6 goals right now for 1 million, he's already a better value than Wellwood.

Kirk McLean was announced as the second inductee into the Canucks Ring of Honour, which will take place on Wed, Nov 24th when the Canucks take on the Avalanche.

MR_BIGGS 11-03-2010 04:38 PM

Anyone been to a game at Rexall Place?

I went to the Canucks game last night and gotta say...what a shitbox arena..just like the city...granted we pay more for Canucks games in Vancouver, but damn...I think Giants games at PC have a better atmosphere...

PS:

I wore my # 13 jersey (took the Sundin off of it)...lol. Torres.

Never been, but was at a Florida Panthers game against Ottawa Senators last year. Nice rink, expensive food, and sucks that only 9000 fans were there. But most had some Panthers logo's top. Either a jersery or sweat shirt. Then there was a few guys with Leaf's, Canuck's, and one guy I could see with a Team Cananda jersey on.
Then there were the few NY Yankees and Miami Dolphins jersey's.

Hondaracer 11-03-2010 05:03 PM

been to saddledome and Bell Center, bell center highly overrated
