Another indefinite leave of absence for Rypien...

http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/I...110/story.html

Quote:

VANCOUVER — Canucks fourth-liner Rick Rypien has been granted an indefinite leave of absence, and defenceman Kevin Bieksa is back practising after a rinkside conversation with general manager Mike Gillis.

It is highly unusual for the GM to interrupt practice, but Gillis spoke to Bieksa for a couple of minutes as practice continued at Rogers Arena. Gillis first spoke with coach Alain Vigneault at the Canuck bench.

Bieksa is due to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. His name has been mentioned numerous times in speculative trade stories over the last two seasons.

The Vancouver Canucks announced today they have granted Rypien the indefinite leave for personal matters.

The Canucks said in a statement: “Rick is a valued member of the organization and the club will continue to support Rick in every way possible. No further comment will be made by the club on this matter.”

Wow, management has shown a lot of patience and support for the guy. Hopefully everything works out for him.

Not sure if this was posted earlier but Sauve is back skating and practicing with the Moose.

Defenceman Yann Sauve, who suffered a concussion when he was struck by a car while crossing Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver on Sept. 4, is back practising with the Moose.

Sauve, the Canucks' second-round pick (41st overall) in the 2008 entry draft, suffered a concussion in that accident, which occurred just before training camp.

Is Rypien going to drug rehab or something?

InvisibleSoul 11-25-2010 02:57 PM

Canucks forum has it that perhaps Gillis was talking to Bieksa about Rypien's leave of absence first because the two of them are pretty close.

That doesn't really add up though... if it is substance abuse, wouldn't the team suspend him instead of granting him an indefinite leave of absence?

Obviously nobody seems to know for sure what his problems are, but one possibility may be mental issues... which would make sense, given the situation.

SkinnyPupp 11-25-2010 03:11 PM

Drug issues could also explain his behavior...

going to the pen for assault

cdizzle_996 11-25-2010 04:19 PM

I've heard through out the years that he is a bit of a head case. Who knows, hopefully he can get his head on straight because he's the only "real" toughness we have.

spoon.ek9 11-25-2010 04:40 PM

strange day. please trade biekshit, best of luck to ripper w/e he's dealing with, and what the hell? i didn't know sauve got hit by a car :lol

Roach 11-25-2010 04:52 PM

I seem to remember someone posting here that Rypien's first leave of absence was due to a fist fight he got into at a bar in Calgary?

Kev

lol @ the guy who gets in a fistfight with the Rypper

also lol @ the trade some guy proposed on the Flames board, of Jokinen, Glencross, and a couple prospects, for.....Tavares. Best part is he was completely serious.

Not necessarily.

Suspending someone is what you do when you're sick of his shit.

A leave of absence is what you do when you want him to get straightened up and get back quickly.

None of which suggests it's any kind of issue like that... it could be a sick family member or something long those lines, too. Remember when Louie took time off because his wife was having a rough pregnancy?
