Thomas save. Definitely. |
why do you guys say Thomas's save? I may like Lu, but really, if you shoot a puck into a glove, does that make it the save of the season? Luongo WAITED for a reaction on the play where he took it off the skate in order to lift his pad off the ice to take the shot, Thomas simply cheated on the play and got lucky 95% of "insane" saves in the NHL are a result of cheating on the play, if you think even a top 5 NHL goalie can react to a wrist shot within 20 feet of the crease your an idiot, every save within 20 feet from elite shooters is all based on anticipation, these days pucks come off sticks so fast there is no way BUT to cheat on a play in order to make a save imo, that is why people may be saying as of now "OMG Thomas for Vezina!!!!" but in reality, Lu is wayyyy more technically sound [as displayed by Thomas's 3rd period goal in whish Lu would -never- be caught on] |
I agree with Hondaracer, i played goalie all these years and ive made many saves similar to the Thomas one but ive also made the Luongo one... The Luongo save is so much harder to do!! its out of pure desperation but its also very technical honestly the leafs kinda made thomas look good all night, they just have terrible execution, i really think thomas is just an average goalie :( although the stats say otherwise I also notice Thomas is like flopping around everywhere, where as bobby lu is always in position, most goals that go on Luongo are really good shots imo...and often caused by defensive breakdowns (i.e. Sharp doing a power move on our defense and cutting infront)...that is a very difficult shot to save |
I prefer Lu's save as well and for me it's the timing factor that plays into. In Thomas' save you don't see beauchemin until the last second but when you did, you expected the puck to go in and there was definitely a wow factor when he saved it but it all happened so quickly. For Lu's toe save, you could see the play develop - the puck was on Kopecky's stick and you could see lu down and the top half of the net exposed so in comparison you had a lot of time to think 'oh fuck, there it is' but then out of nowhere he kicks up his right skate and so at this point you're like 'holy shit' cause you were positive the puck the was going in. It's that extra time of anticipation that makes the save better for me. |

I haven't seen the Luongo save but one factor to consider with the Thomas save is that it occured in overtime with the leafs putting up sustained pressure |
I don't think the shot was headed for his glove. Thomas dived for it. I'm not a Lu hater but to suggest Thomas isn't as good because he flops around is silly. That's like saying Dominic Hasek was terrible because he flops around his net wildly. If the puck stays out of the net, that's a good goaltender. By the way, Thomas being out of position has resulted in a GAA of under 2...something like 1.45. Louie's great positioning has got him a 2.5. Until Lu wins a Vezina like Thomas has, your argument is invalid. |
No Raymond today :( Quote:

Thomas's save looked a lot more difficult to make, there was some serious velocity on that shot and it's not like he shot it directly at his glove. He shot it low and hard at an empty net but Thomas dove and gloved it. |
In one way or another both saves were spectacular, and you cannot measure the amount of one's skill or luck in a save like this, but rather only with consistency. You can't argue that "Lu got lucky" or "the shot went right into thomas's glove" because the save obviously made it look like it did. Without some fraction of luck, both are sure goals. "Luongo lifted his leg in desperation.." of course he did. Highlight reel goal tending is based on desperation saves. Did Thomas not "dive across the net in desperation?" You could also say that all Beachemin needed to do was slide the puck against the ice. In the heat of the moment, as a player your aim is to get the puck on net whatever way you can because the next thing you know the keeper is back into position or a D-Man is on you. You hope for the best because more than likely that puck is going in. You have no time to predict where the goalie is going to be in a situation like those of Beauchemin and Kopecky. Theres no homerism, no bandwagoning.. Both are fantastic saves - the fact that NHL.com had them both on the front page proves it. It just seems homerist because of course, we are all canucks ..right? btw, Raymond is out due to the flu. Quote:

Nothing new either last year or the year before they dressed Rome as a forward as well. |
