Thomas for Vezina because he's leading the NHL in save %, GAA, shut-outs. check out the stats page on nhl.com, his face is everywhere.

You're right, in reality, Lu IS way more technically sound, because that's his game, strong technical butterfly goaltending. Because that's just what the modern butterfly is, a scientific approach to goaltending. In contrast to the butterfly, you got Tim Thomas, flopper, Hasek, flopper, and Ryan Miller, a hybrid who are pretty good goalies..

Ryan Miller was pretty damn scary in the 2010 Olympics..

Vezina's aren't awarded to the "most technically sound" goalie. Even if this was so, Luongo still wouldn't win, hahaha.

LOL @ Karlsson reactions. Great to see him having fun out there.

dim_sum 12-05-2010 02:30 PM

i would still take Lu over Thomas ANYDAY. Thomas plays for one of the best defensive teams in the league.

I'm not a Lu hater but to suggest Thomas isn't as good because he flops around is silly. That's like saying Dominic Hasek was terrible because he flops around his net wildly.

If the puck stays out of the net, that's a good goaltender. By the way, Thomas being out of position has resulted in a GAA of under 2...something like 1.45. Louie's great positioning has got him a 2.5. Until Lu wins a Vezina like Thomas has, your argument is invalid.

until the golden goal heh. i can't remember who, but one of his teammates stared him down after that goal. i think a lot of us will remember that goal for life.

Thomas is good, but in reality these days in the NHL, how effective can that flopping style be long-term? as said above he plays on a very sound defensive team

not to take anything away from him, he's obviously good and has won the vezina in the past, but time will tell if that style will hold up, especially when you have Rask biting at the spot as well

choda 12-05-2010 03:01 PM

Nice to see Ottawa finally score a goal

Also not much of an argument.

Thomas has faced MORE shots than Luongo in FEWER games and has MUCH higher GAA. He's clearly playing lights out so far this season and is the early frontrunner for the Vezina. If you think he isn't, then you are just wrong. I'd say only Carey Price...yes, Carey Price, has been close so far with about a quarter of the season behind us.

Yes, I would take Louie long term over Thomas but clearly Thomas is the better goalie so far about 20 games in. Are you really going to argue with a stat line like THIS:

18GP - 13W, 2L, 2OTL
1.46 GAA, 0.956 SV%
FIVE shutouts.

Hondaracer 12-05-2010 04:15 PM

this is another one of those meme's though

20 games

makes whole season

:troll:

if he didnt already have a vezina he would be talked about kind of like how howard is talked about

'06-07 Hasek had 38 wins, 11 losses and 6 OTL with a 2.05 GAA and a 0.913 SV%.

Sure, he played for Detroit but STILL.

Heck, he's playing in the Czech league right now and he's still doing pretty damned good. If he doesn't make the HOF, it's a travesty.

I'll say it again...it doesn't matter what style a goalie plays. He could actually stand on his head for all I care. If the puck isn't going in the net, that guy is a good goaltender.

Long term? There's some truth to that...I mean, Thomas was horrid last year.

spoon.ek9 12-05-2010 04:32 PM

30mins till game time! woooooo :jiggy:

Actually contrary to popular belief. Thomas was not horrible last year. He had a .915 save %. About the same has Luongo's last year. He was overtaken because Rask played outstanding and now he's playing outstanding and has the #1 job back.

punkwax 12-05-2010 04:58 PM

Rask is killing me in my pool. Damn you Thomas!
