That's a fair argument.

Honestly I don't know if Naslund should be up there. Ya he's got the regular season numbers but that's it.

But I guess you have to base the standards of jersey retirement on just the team/city itself and not the entire league. In this manner then I think all 3 deserve to be up there.

jersey retirement should only be meaning for franchise such as: Trevor Linden

linden performance was an all-star before the 94 cup run, after that it has gone downhill but made it up for charity work for this city

if canucks retire #19 naslund, detriot should retire osgood, hull, shannahan and hasek :argue:

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Anaheim Ducks left wing Aaron Voros suffered a fractured orbital bone during a fight with Vancouver defenseman Kevin Bieksa during Wednesday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Canucks.

The fight occurred in the opening seconds of the second period, when Bieksa got in several good shots to the head of Voros.

Personal achievements aside, Naslund's contribution to the community was always in the limelight.

The only downer for his career in Vancouver? only the following

Winning two playoff rounds
His exit from Vancouver
The "we choked" speech in 2003

I will admit, the speech at the end of the 03 season was heartbreaking. It was like a dagger to the Canucks fanbase. It started a public outcry from media and fans alike in which a lot of us questioned his passion as a Canuck. Can Markus Naslund, the once great winger on the West Coast Express who was 1 and two in league scoring lead us to glory if he decided that he wanted to continue his career in Vancouver? That to me was probably what a lot of casual and even die hards will remember of Naslund.

It was that speech that he promised to be better in the playoffs, especially when the previous year in which Nick Lidstrom single handedly blew out the flame for the Canucks and the fact the year before that in which he was invisible for the most part against the blues and minny.

I believe it was that following playoffs against Calgary is where I personally found the light to believe he was going to lead us to glory. Most probably would not remember that it was Naslund himself who rushed the puck in the final minute of the third in Game7 against the Flames that lead to the tying goal by Matt Cooke. However, the lost followed 5 minutes in to OT, but it wasn't his fault.

To say that by retiring his number was the proper exit is bullshit. This was a player who played a large part in turning the franchise around in the 90s and was a huge spokesperson in which aside from leading by example on the ice, lead big time in contributions to the community.

With all that said above, it almost proves that the standards on why a player should have his jersey number retired is pretty much lowered, but in the 40 year history, the canucks are finally trying to set some tradition. From what I see, All three players were great for what they stand for, but these guys have gone above and beyond to put their heart out in helping the CITY OF VANCOUVER grow as a city in which we all live in today.

Did anybody else hit up the Ryan Kesler Autograph signing today? Surprisingly the line up was pretty decent. Including lineup it only took me 25 mins.

Anyone see this yet?

First NHL game and he has the balls to pull that move off. I kinda think its dumb to start the move from all the way back there, but you gotta admit, for his first game, that's some flash.

shawn79 12-10-2010 11:45 PM

hockey is a game of momemtum, and hes got it all in the building before attempting the shoot out
forgot to mention all europeans got some swag for the shootout

It obviously confused the hell out of the goalie, and just the split second Ellis was running "WTF is he doing?", the focus was lost. But yeah... amazing level of confidence in that dude.

InvisibleSoul 12-11-2010 12:06 AM

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet... or did I somehow miss it?

-Erhoff likely out for tomorrow due to the shot he took off the ear last game
-Raymond out for awhile with a broken thumb
-Samuelsson back in tomorrow

Fake slapshot then rip it home, ftw!

Edmonton's got some life.............. at least for now.

Bouncing Bettys 12-11-2010 12:46 AM

As long as the Oilers suck, they can have all the flashy rookie shootout goals for the highlight reels. I get to watch the Leafs get pelted with waffles instead.

If you know where and when they practice you don't need to wait 25 minutes. I got Luongo to sign my Team Canada jersey I'm working on and I got Burrows to sign a puck for me too.
