Kesler so reminds me of Trevor Linden. Damn, I hope Kesler catches Canuck fever - don't see him ever calling Vancouver his home.

glad I dressed Kesler over Toews.
I hope everyone watched the HBO Winter Classic 24/7 special - it was awesome. The next episode is next wednesday. Unfortunately repeats of tonights episode are at rediculous times like 9:25am on sunday, 3:20am on monday, and 7am on wednesday.

Anyone still think Nonis was an idiot for matching Kesler's offer sheet?
No?
Thought so.

Perhaps you've forgotten how much heat Nonis took over matching the offer at $1.9M, and how many people said he should have let Bobby Clarke have him? If they'd had their way, your statement would be moot.

I remember all that back then. Kesler was gold, but it seemed he was struggling. The injury didn't help matters. It was just a matter of time and Bobby Clarke knew it. Did Nonis know this too or was he just reacting? In any case, so glad Nonis made the right decision.

Kesler took a paycut just to stay in vancouver. Hell even the head of the nhlpa showed his displeasure with the deal. Posted via RS Mobile |

Thought so. | I remember saying he has the potential to be a solid 2nd line center and does have some sort or scoring touch and everyone flamed me, saying he has stone hands.....perhaps true at the time his offer sheet was matched...but definitely he already showed promise then.

Kesler got in trouble with the PA when he suggested that players need to take paycut (or reduce their salary demands) if they want to build a winning team. This was before he signed his current contract.

Regardless of how well Kesler is playing now, it doesn't change the fact that the contract was an overpayment at the time. Nonis isn't some kind of genius - the flyers offered 1.9 for 1 year; he would have been an idiot not to match that and lose a prospect.

Alot of people, canuck fans especially, want developement to happen over night. it happend for the first few years of the sedins, everyone wanted them out of here as they were stuck cycling in the corners and 'would never learn how to score'. it happend with kesler in his first couple years, he had all the speed and hockey sence in the world but no hands. and it happened 2 months ago with cody hodgeson.
i remember when clarke threw out the offer sheet, alot of people thought it was silly to match, $1.9 for a $1m player. thank god Nonis made the right move. kesler got in shit from the PA when he came out with the statement saying people need to take a hometown discount. and then he turned around and signed a pretty substantial contract at the time. but just you wait, 5mil will be a steal for him pretty soon, and hes here for a while and has a NTC coming into effect in 2012. hes very much a canuck. and will wear the C before his career here is over.

Anyway. | I should've been more specific. I was asking if you were serious about Kesler not calling Vancouver home. He also reminds me of Linden, not the same personality, but he is all heart and I think he's going to be here a long time.

At the time it was a fairly obvious choice considering we couldn't afford to lose anymore assets
I think at that time I agreed with the matching but I though that if it was over 3 it wouldnt have been worth it
So obviously I would have been wrong if that had been the case Posted via RS Mobile |

I suggested it just needs time for the old-school guys who still think they can still just move around to wherever they get the most money, to shuffle on out the door, as the young guys who've played under the cap their whole careers start taking over, coming in with a different attitude and a realization of the way things work now.
It will get to the point where even the big names won't be able to get their asking price anymore, because EVERYONE will be up against the cap as players try to max out their salaries. Guys will start to realize, they HAVE to accept less, or they're going to end up not playing at all.
And as much heat as Kesler got over the contract thing, I think part of the problem there is the same problem that the rest of the league has: the agents, who probably get paid a percentage and thus have the most interest in getting their players the highest salaries they can. It's going to be even harder for them to come to the same realization, that as more players make more money, more teams will bump up against the cap, and more big-money players are going to find themselves without contracts.
