the fall looked so awkward too. almost like if he kept his arm out he might have broken his arm in the fall and maybe injured his neck too

yeah, I was thinking of that too. Natural reaction is to try to break your fall with your arms or hands, but with all that gear on, probably best to just tuck in and land on a shoulder or even elbow in hockey.
