It sure would be nice if Ballard came back for Saturday's game as reported Wednesday. But at the same time, I'm pretty sure he'll be fine for next week.

spoon.ek9 02-18-2011 07:36 PM

the last thing i want to see is either of them come back too early and get injured again. when they come back, they better be 100%!

Not really racist! 02-18-2011 07:37 PM

^ that

Hammer and Ballard apparently going to be able to practice tml

Agreed. I'd much rather wait a few more games than to rush them back before they are 100% ready.

Points right now don't mean very much. Getting 1st place in the conference or the league doesn't mean very much either. I want to make sure that we have a healthy defense corp for the playoffs.

!Nhan 02-18-2011 08:04 PM

You can't say getting 1st in the conference doesn't matter. We want this so we can have home ice throughout the whole playoffs. Of course I agree with you that we shouldn't rush them back, but not having home ice during the playoffs would hinder us.

tonyzoomzoom 02-18-2011 08:25 PM

^^^ i agree that have 1st in the conference would be ideal (home ice advantage); but if that means rushing Hamhuis and Ballard back at the risk of further injury cuz they are not fully ready, then I think it's not worth the risk

btw, I <3 your avatar lots

Dan Hamhuis could return to Canucks as early as tomorrow

At some point, by the law of averages, the Canucks procession of blueliners to the injured list is going to begin a turnaround.
It could start now with both Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard.
Ahead of schedule, Ballard is expected to start skating with the Canucks any day now, and could play next week, about two weeks after spraining his knee.
Of all the injuries, Hamhuis's concussion was the most serious because it involves brain recovery, an unknown variable if there ever was one.
But since Ryan Getzlaf clipped him into the end boards Feb. 9, Hamhuis's improvement has been steady. He is on the verge of rejoining his teammates. If he is still symptom free it could be Saturday morning.
The process began with light, off-ice workouts last week and progressed this week to skating. Hamhuis hasn't exhibited post-concussion symptoms, meaning he has moved from one phase of the recovery to the next (sport specific training) without setback.
If all goes well, he may participate in the morning skate leading up to the Dallas game. But even if he's cleared for contact as early as tomorrow, it doesn't mean he'll play.
The Canucks are keenly aware of the risks involved, that a player is more at risk to serious head injury if he's not fully recovered. Just look at what happened to Sidney Crosby who, it's believed, already had a concussion when he was hit by Victor Hedman days after the David Steckel hit.
Looking back, there has been thought within Vancouver organization that maybe Ballard came back too soon after missing two weeks with a concussion in October. Ballard has since admitted he felt like "terrible" in the four games he played in early November before getting scratched.
"I felt terrible. I needed more time to get my body back and get comfortable on the ice," Ballard has since acknowleged.
At the time, some believed sitting Ballard down was a move simply made because Aaron Rome was playing better. But there were more considerations involved, most importantly Ballard's health.
So, after that experience, the Canucks have been cautious with Hamhuis. They want to be sure when he comes back, he's ready.
That could be soon.

The St. Louis Blues made their second major deal in less than 24 hours when they dealt former No. 1 overall pick Erik Johnson to Colorado early Saturday.

Hours after sending captain Eric Brewer to Tampa Bay for junior defenseman Brock Beukeboom and a draft pick, the Blues dealt Johnson, also a defenseman, to the Avs along with forward Jay McClement and a first-round pick for rookie defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, third-year forward Chris Stewart and a second-round pick.

From NHL.com, these are the conditions: "The draft picks will be used in the 2011 Entry Draft unless the Blues have a top-10 selection, in which case St. Louis can opt to transfer its 2012 first-rounder instead. If that happens, the Avs will send their second-round pick to St. Louis in 2012 instead of 2011."

YES!! Finally someone named Beukeboom is back in the NHL!

Yeah....

Not sure what St Louis and Colorado are doing there..

It's a pretty massive trade considering the players involved.

d1 02-18-2011 11:03 PM

Has Eric Johnson's value dropped that much? A year ago if St. Louis traded EJ + a first rounder I'd expect a franchise player going back.

I guess Chris Stewart does have the potential to be a point/game player though..

Chris Stewart was on the verge of a breakout before he got hurt. Pretty even trade both ways. Shattenkirk showed promise at the beginning of the season and Johnson is turning into a good all around D-man.

Expresso 02-19-2011 01:29 AM

Yea but its more of trade you expect leading up to the draft, now makes no sense.

St. Louis can't score and Colorado can't defend. On paper, it looks like a win-win for both teams.
