Now that the emotion of the Zdeno Chara bump on Max Pacioretty has subsided and the Montreal police are busily trying to make something out of very little in their investigation of a visiting player, it might be an idea to look for the reasons why there was such a wider reaction to this mishap.
It was, of course, nothing like the Todd Bertuzzi situation, but if the Montreal general manager had pulled a Pierre Lacroix and called a press conference and, in very grave tones, announced that Pacioretty had a 'broken neck,' the results might have been very similar because the injuries were very similar.
Whatever is determined to be the extent of Steve Moore's concussion problems, they definitely developed well after the injury.
But Pacioretty was released, the GMs have had their meetings and taken cautious steps toward helping the concussion epidemic, and the issue is relaxing a shade after a massive reaction over the league's decision not to suspend Chara.
And when you look at the reasons for the reaction, particularly from those who are not ardent followers of the game, you're left with one basic conclusion: Nobody trusts the league -for a litany of reasons.
Let's review some.
They have a vice-president of hockey operations, Colin Campbell, whose son plays with the Boston Bruins. Whenever a Boston player is involved in a situation which warrants a second look with a view to possible supplementary discipline, Campbell steps away and insists he has nothing to do with any such decisions. Right! Instead of Campbell making the decision, his best friend and immediate underling with whom he works closely every day will make the decision.
And these guys see absolutely no conflict there. They think it's perfectly acceptable. Question it, and they believe you're questioning the integrity of the individual in question.
When the L.A. Kings recently had a goal-no goal situation go against them, their GM Dean Lombardi said of Mike Murphy, who is that aforementioned Campbell assistant: "When the guy in Toronto who makes the decision on the goals wanted the GM's job in L.A. and was not happy about not getting it, you have to assume you are going to get those types of calls."
If that's what he said, that's likely what he meant, although he later apologized after the NHL fined him $50,000.
That same fellow in question, Murphy, who played with the Kings, gives an interview to the team website about how he'd love to see L.A. win a Stanley Cup one day.
Why he would think to say such things in that position is remarkable in itself. But it's still up on that website when he makes a ridiculous call against Daniel Sedin last season, claiming the Vancouver forward had a deliberate kicking motion on a puck that went into the L.A. goal in the middle of a playoff series between the teams.
When this web posting is pointed out in the Vancouver papers, it is hastily removed and complaints about such laughably inept behaviour are treated with belligerent questions as to whether you're questioning Murphy's integrity.
The league says it investigated possible Toronto tampering with the Sedins prior to July 1, 2009. Then you find out that they spoke to neither of their agents, J.P. Barry or Claes Elefalk, nor to either of the Sedin twins. This is an NHL investigation? Laughable.
You have the leaked Campbell email scandal which the league brushed under the table by taking advantage of the fact the media has very few resources to do follow-ups or investigations of any kind themselves and the television media has very little motivation to do so.
You have a commissioner who is booed lustily by the fans in almost every city he visits. His contract extensions come from a very narrow power base of owners he evidently keeps happy and certainly Joe Thornton thinks Boston is one of those teams. And yet those extensions are never announced other than to leak out long after the fact. If the league thought he was doing a good job, why wouldn't they announce those extensions?
And let the record show we haven't even touched the league's complete denial of any problem they are perceived to have with the on-ice officiating, or should we say game management. We really could go on and on.
When issues like this are never addressed, is there any wonder the public doesn't trust the league to make the right judgment on almost anything?

Hmmmm, in light of the Burrows boarding incident, I'm wondering how come there's not much reaction on Malhotra's injury. Wasn't that an elbow to the face?
(apology in advance if I'm wrong. I'm just judging it based on a few angles I saw on TV but I didn't really go and take a better/closer look on YT)
