I would give my right nut.

We had a rugged dman prospect in luc bourdon (RIP). Giving up Bieksa for a prospect would be wicked! Apparently next years draft is deep so if we could get a first rounder that would be nuts...

Anyone know how many first rounders Florida has next year?

That would never happen. If it does, I will kiss Mike Gillis right on the mouth because that is an incredible deal.

Think about it...Tinordi was the guy we wanted in the draft. When we couldn't get him, we traded for Ballard.

That means:

We get: Ballard, Tinordi

For: Bieksa, Bernier, Grabs

Bieksa salary off the books and a huge, blue chip D-man prospect who was a fucking beast for the US in the WJC. Make no mistake...Bieksa will not be playing for the Canucks this year barring some kind of ridiculous miracle so we're basically getting Tinordi for nothing.

I agree with you completly on all of this points. I think one of the main issues is that Montreal is having cap issues as well so it's a long shot. But you gotta love rumors like this man I love the off season.

Kovi's 17 year deal for $102 million has been rejected by the NHL!!!!!!!!!

NHL says it circumvents the NHL's salary cap.

EDIT: not so breaking news. raygunpk got it on the last page..lol.

The NHL has rejected Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL's salary cap.

Kovalchuk was slated to earn $95 million over the first 10 years of the deal and then just $7 million over the last seven seasons. That would translate to an annual cap hit of $6 million per year.

TSN Insider Darren Dreger explains that the deal was rejected due to the fact that the NHL does not believe that either Kovalchuk nor the Devils expected the 2004 Rocket Richard trophy winner would be playing near end of the contract and that it is a case of artificially lowering the annual average value of the contract. The Devils must now either file the contract once again or the Players' Association can file a grievance.

Should the NHLPA decide to file a grievance, the contract would remain dead until an arbitrator determines otherwise.

The current CBA explains circumvention as the following in section 26.3:

(a) No Club or Club Actor, directly or indirectly, may: (i) enter into any agreements, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, whether express, implied, oral or written, including without limitation, any SPC, Qualifying Offer, Offer Sheet or other transaction, or (ii) take or fail to take any action whatsoever, if either (i) or (ii) is intended to or has the effect of defeating or Circumventing the provisions of this Agreement or the intention of the parties as reflected by the provisions of this Agreement, including without limitation, provisions with respect to the financial and other reporting obligations of the Clubs and the League, Team Payroll Range, Player Compensation Cost Redistribution System, the Entry Level System and/or Free Agency.

The 27-year-old rejected a $101 million, 12-year extension from the Atlanta Thrashers before being dealt to the Devils in February.

Kovalchuk had 41 goals and 44 assists last season, including 10 goals and 17 assists with the Devils.

where was this when the islanders sign DiPietro to a 15year contract :lol

raygunpk 07-20-2010 07:55 PM

^DiPietro's contract is 15 years, but he has the same salary throughout.
I think it was Zetterberg's contract that started the loophole of lowering cap hit:

well im glad the NHL is showing it has some balls and putting an end to the nonsense but i just want this kovalchuk crap to be over so the rest of the teams can make their moves

winson604 07-20-2010 08:08 PM

raygunpk 07-20-2010 08:26 PM

^Arbitrator has 48 hours to decide, so we'll hear something tomorrow/Thursday.

how could it be nonsense if it is within the rules that they agreed to?

It is within the rules of the CBA.

I don't know why you think its nonsense. As a GM of a team, it's your JOB to find these loopholes and work around them. There's a reason why the Canucks hired a capologist specifically for that purpose.

TRD Rs200 07-20-2010 08:38 PM

i was under the impression that contracts under the CBA had to be signed in good faith and with full intention to be honoured. that means players signing contracts with the intention of playing out that entire contract. do you honestly believe kovalchuk could live up to a contract where he would play until he is 44?

seems to me that kovy could very well be like a yashin
how stupid would that be if he decides to just not show up a few years down the road LOL

mqr03 07-20-2010 08:54 PM

Now that Kovalchucks contract is void with the devils, what would it take for the Canucks to sign him? Could we unload a couple big contracts and depend on the younger rookies to fill the roles of players like samuelson, kesler, erhoff to get a shot at signing Kovy?
