Perry looks MVP right now. the science behind that is that he has 50 goals and is carrying the team on his back. And without getzlaf for parts of the season...much like how hank was with dank last year

I am sure that this question has been covered. Total hockey noob here.
Why does the NHL schedule their games such that each division play within themselves 5-6 games each season? Not saying the Canucks don't deserve the presidents trophy but if you play against teams that don't even make the playoffs half the time, of course your record is going to look spectecular!
Another thing that bothers me is that having Detroit and Chicago in the West is beyond me...
I grew up watching the NBA, please enlighten me. Posted via RS Mobile |

I grew up watching the NBA, please enlighten me. Posted via RS Mobile | The divisions and how strong or weak they are evolve all the time. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad but at the end of the day you generally deserve where you land. Look at the 02-03 season, 4 of the 8 western teams in the playoffs were from the NW. How many President trophy's did Detroit win feasting on one of the worst divisions in hockey for years and during that time they were playing each team in there divison 8 times.

I grew up watching the NBA, please enlighten me. Posted via RS Mobile | The majority of NHL teams are out East. Strangely, the Canucks used to be in the East Division when they joined the NHL.
The schedule was redone after the lockout to reduce costs. They said to "encourage rivalries" but that was bullshit. It was to reduce the travel costs of NHL teams so division rivals played 8 games against each other.
That was gay as hell because we had to play Minnesota all the damn time and never got to see the Caps or Pens or Habs, etc so now we play 6 division games, 4 conference games and every other team at least once (twice for three teams...I think we play the Eastern Canadian teams twice).
That really shouldn't take anything away from the Canucks season. Sure we destroyed our own division but the West is significantly stronger than the East.

By the way...Mother Russia wants Shirokov back. Quote:
CHL: CSKA wants to return to Filatov and Shirokova
05.04.2011 08:28Guide CSKA interested in returning to the club forwards Nikita Filatov and Sergei Shirokov .
For 20-year-old Filatov this season in Columbus 'frankly do not specify - in 23 appearances for the Blue Jackets' power forward in the account of 7 (0 +7) points. Filatov does not shine in farm-club - Springfield, where he had after 32 games 17 (8 +9) points for performance. 25-year Shirokov once again failed to gain a foothold in "Vancouver", but rather productive playing in the AHL club, "Manitoba Moose," which in 73 games scored 55 (21 +34) points.
It is worth recalling that in Filatov sezone-2009/10 along with Albert Leshchev became chief joker army, and a wide two years ago after refusing to leave CSKA guide red and blue meet the contractual requirements of the player.
In addition, according to the Swedish Expressen, CSKA Moscow reached an agreement to move the team 32 year old striker Nicklas Persson, who for two seasons in "Naftokhimik" had 108 matches and scored 58 (17 +41) points.
| I recently joined a Canucks blog so I wrote a demo of my writing style and such analyzing Shirokov and his future with the Canucks. In short...qualify the guy and trade his ass with Schnoo for whatever the Canucks need next year.

Thanks for the history and rationale behind this guys. I don't really watch other teams play and don't know enough about the NHL system so I can't really see the justifications behind the weird schedule.
Yea, maybe there's minimal effects on performance. But don't you think balancing out the games are much better? In terms of knowing you apponents in the playoffs? Traveling cost can be an issue... but they ticket sales and broadcasting revenue can make up for it.
Just thinking that it will be much better if the league is more balanced out. Posted via RS Mobile |

surpisingly not overly upset....we showed we were a very good team once things clicked...unfortunately that click happened after loosing 85% of our first 40 games.
i think a canucks vs flames first round would have been a lot more difficult than most canucks fans think.
depending on who the canucks get...chicago or anahiem, the nucks better fear anahiem...i think they will tear the canucks a new one if the nucks drift into the playoffs thinking they are the gods of the nhl
