The Orange County Register is reporting that the Anaheim Ducks are interested in acquiring Canuck defenceman Kevin Bieksa.

It makes some sense. The Ducks are looking a little thin on the blue line -- their top two D-men are Lubomir Visnovsky and James Wisniewski, who will never be mistaken for Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer -- and Anaheim GM Bob Murray and head coach Randy Carlyle both know Bieksa well.

Murray is a former pro scout with the Canucks, while Carlyle coached Bieksa when he broke into the pros with the Manitoba Moose.

The Register reports that Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has also had expressions of interest in Bieksa from a number of other teams, including Los Angeles, San Jose, Columbus and Montreal.

With the recent acquisitions of Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis, the Canucks are overloaded on defence and need to dump some salary. Bieksa has one year, at $3.5 million, left on his contract.

yeah, I meant he wouldn't replace those goals in the immediate future, ie. this year and likely next. Long term it might be a wash, but at this point Raymond is at least semi-proven, while Grabner is still an unknown.

IMO, Raymond hasn't really proven himself yet. He played on the second line with Kesler and Samuelson. He better be getting chances.
But there were times last season where he made mistakes and rode the pine the rest of the game.

Grabner hasn't even been given a serious shot at the NHL yet. So no way we can say who is better.

Not really racist! 07-22-2010 02:07 PM

I remember Mathew Barnaby was on TSN saying how players should stay with the team in which is a good fit for them rather than chase the tiny bit of extra dough on the open market. He said players have ruined their careers because they went to a team where they couldn't adapt as well and play up the the level they were at before, and also live up to the pressure of a big contract.

I think this is apparent in a lot of young players who have that ONE good season (ie. Bieksa, Anson Carter).

I just hope Raymond doesn't make the same mistake but being too greedy.

Edler is one player who got signed the big bucks early on but lived up to his potential though.

People should do what Burrows did, take a HUGE pay cut and perform super awesome

Ikkaku 07-22-2010 06:15 PM

Mason Raymond is looking for $3.5 - $4 million per year, if this is the case, Canucks MAY look to move him, key word : MAY

Did someone bring up jokin' an again an again?

Hondaracer 07-22-2010 09:04 PM

Hodgsons cap hit is like 1.3 mill if he makes it

If I was Gillis i'd say look Raymond, you had one breakout season and have been progressing in progress, you've been a good canuck, and I'm sure you love playing in the city of Vancouver and the facilities/attitude this club has towards achieving our goals, we're completely willing to commit to you long term if you want to continue to play here and achieve succes under a workable cap number

2.95-3.65 for 3 to 5 years and if thats not good enough then i'd say walk because we cannot continue to progress without being able to move within the cap, or sign a 1 year deal at 3.5, and go from there, if he's looking for 4+ we shouldnt sign imo
