chicago doesn't have 8th locked down because of the whole new way they decide if teams are tied. it goes by wins in regulation so basically even tho chicago has more wins from the look of it they seem to have less regulation wins than dallas. same thing for nyr and carolina for 8th in the east i think. then if they are tied in that its decided by season series
So assuming Chicago loses in regulation and Dallas wins in regulation OR overtime (but not a shootout), they will both have 97 points, and 38 ROW.
They've played each other 4 times:
Dallas 3 Chicago 5
Dallas 4 Chicago 2
Chicago 3 Dallas 4 SO
Chicago 0 Dallas 5
Giving Dallas a record of 3-1-0 and Chicago at 1-2-1
Therefore, Dallas gets #8?
So complicated...
Yeah, lol. In the Dallas Stars website, on the first page, there's a link explaining it.
Although they don't mention the 3rd tie breaker. Which is what you just stated.
Honestly, it gets worse. I'll quote from NHL.com
Quote:
The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
... too complicated, TL;DR. I won't get it anyway. I'll let NHL figure it out

^ that sounds right to me. oddly enough, chicago plays detroit again then dallas plays minnesota. by the end of sunday, we will know who our first round opponent is.

This whole shootout point thing is getting too stupid.
But yeah, that's probably how it will all play out. Chicago needs to lose and Dallas needs to win in regulation or OT. One point clinches for the Blackhawks.
I know you're not supposed to "want to play someone", but I really hope we get Dallas.
thats only if you are actually playing on the vancouver canucks and are reporting to the media.

If we play the Blackhawks first round, and we lose? Then what? Seriously! The last Chicago Canuck game was a nail bitter! I don't know if I can handle a Chicago Vancouver series...

But if he wasn't in the lineup, would the Canucks still be doing well? Of course. The same can't be said for Perry (sigh). Remember the trophy is for the player most valuable for his team.
Who knows what would've happened had daniel been injured. People thought the penguins were done without Sid and Malkin but look at them now. Like some of the tsn analysts said, they really should change the award to Most Outstanding Player - give it to the best player in the league and take out the question of value.
Its not about proving a point by beating chicago, its about hoping to find the easiest path to the cup. Just like the presidents trophy doesnt mean a whole lot, winning a grudge match means even less. the goal is to win the cup.
Would a hard fought 7 game with overtimes series against chicago where we lose 3 guys to injury really be better than a 4 game sweep of Dallas?
Im glad at least a couple people are getting on the playing Dallas bandwagon. Ive been hoping and posting about that matchup for the last 3 weeks!
Don't forget to consider travel when discussing the easiest path to the cup. There's so much parity in the league that any team can beat any other team on any given night. You'd think over a 7 game series the superior team would come out on top, but a well rested team could take out a better team after a long series with heavy travel involved.
All I know is I really like our chances no matter what.

But it is, in a way... they may need to prove to themselves that they can beat Chicago, after being smacked down by them in the second round the last two years. Sure, both teams have changed (Chicago especially), but there's still that little niggling thing in the back of the head... yes, they're highly-paid professionals; no, it SHOULDN'T affect them... but I guarantee you, in spite of what they say to the press, some of them will still have that little mental question that needs to be overcome.
