License Plates in Photos

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before, you could kindly direct me to the thread because I'm pretty fail at searching

Recently my friend asked why I have pictures of my car on Facebook but I didn't bother to blot or blur out the license plate number. I thought of that before and I've also come to notice lots of people tend to do this when they post up pictures of their cars but I was just too lazy to photoshop mine.

Now my question is, what is the big deal if I do or do not block it out? Am I at risk of having my car stolen because the general public can see my car and license plate? Are there a-holes out there that plan to use that picture and license plate number to track my home address or something of that nature?

What other reasons are there for people censoring their plates in pictures? Please teach this noob

its really not a big deal, but all my friends do it because of privacy.
blur it just to be safe imo.

it is a vaguely identifiable number to your person (or at least, the registered owner of the vehicle).

the vancouver sun has/had a database of traffic tickets:

http://www.vancouversun.com/parking/...ed-search.html

it potentially could show where you've been parked and ticketed thereby establishing a pattern of behaviour...

but really, that information link between license plate and registered owner/principal operator is held by ICBC and is not (or at least shouldn't be) shared with the general public.

it can easily be accessed by thieves on the icbc database. Autoplan agents ,tow companies etc can easily get your private info.

remember the case of the guy stealing the front lip off another guy on tsxclub?

if not here's the link. http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/canada...l-members.html

let's say you had a heavily modded car. let's say someone wanted your parts. if they know your plates and dig up enough information on you. they could steal your mods.

or say someone hates you/wants to stalk you. i guess they could dig up personal info on you. that's how rebecca schaeffer got killed. because a stalker dug up her home address through the DMV(equivalent to ICBC).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Schaeffer

blurring plates is a safe measure, i guess.

Lol I remember when that thread was posted on AcuraZine - damn it was epic.

Then there was the fellow 3G TL and his TL breaking up his family.

Fuck is it just me or do all the soap operas happen on Acura forums?

By deductive reasoning, Acura owners are wack
therefore, I must also be wack.

Well I don't really care for all the other details since it's pretty much out there anyway - I work in the service industry
... but ...what??... bank info??... all that from my plate?? That sounds pretty scary ...
