New phone

Hey guys, I am 18 years old and I still don't have a phone, and I am getting a job soon and I think it's about time I get myself a phone.

But since I am a total newbie, I was wondering if you guys could help me out here, like maybe suggest a solid company with some good plans. And maybe even point out some nice phones out there. I am looking for infinite text and limited call, and I want a blackberry but I feel like it would be a waste on me, so any suggestions on new, and nice phones would be welcome.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

whats your monthly budget for a cell phone plan?

Don't bother with a smartphone if you don't plan on getting a data plan.

Best thing to do is to see how much you plan to spend on your monthly bill and then decide on a phone based on that.

Sounds like you're just starting to join the work force so I'm going to assume you'll want to keep costs down as much as possible. If that's the case then you'll probably just want a basic voice + sms plan for roughly $30.

http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCatalog/VoicePlans/

Wind Mobile sounds ilke something that would fit your need. They have a promo going on right now until the end of June where you get 50% off your plan for the first 6 months of service. The Always Talk package is a good deal considering you get unlimited calling within the province and caller ID

Hi, thanks for the replies

I am looking forward to maybe 30-40$ a month, if I do get the job I am currently applying for then I would not mind spending up to 50$ per month but once again, I think that would just be a waste on me. So with that said, is Wind mobile a good place for me to start?

Sorry I am a newbie so what's the difference between smartphones and regular phones?

and Darthchilli what do you mean by waiting until I am 19?

you need to be at least 19 to open an account or already have established some credit. They will be running a credit check on you. You might be able to get away by putting down a cash deposit.

worse case, buy a used phone and go on pre paid if they wont let u sign up for a regular account.

Always start with pre-paid, know how many minutes you will be using, and your usage patterns. There's no use starting an unlimited talk+text plan if you only talk <100 minutes/month

don't go with wind, cuz u have to have a 3.5g network phone which most of the time would cost a lot & if u buy from them then it's gonna be expensive

i say go with pre-paid as well, try 7-11's speak-out there pretty good my buddy was using them for while in terms of cheap phone solutions

Are you someone who is a facebook/twitter addict? Like do you need to blog and tweeter every 3-5 mins? if so you can try the smartphones if you work at a location where there is WiFi, a friend of mine has a iphone 3gs and 90% of the time he's using his workplace WiFi or Home WiFi. On the rare occasion where he spends a weekend out partying he just uses the 3$/day on demand 3G. $40/m = basic plan with about 3-4 days of 3G.

If you are just using the phone to keep in touch with friends and don't really care about facetube twitter thingy then a basic $100 phone from any big manufacturer + a rogers $100/year pay as you go plan is the best value.

Hey guys, thanks again for the responses

I am looking at Fido and I like their new phone the LG Gossip, it is $0 when you get a plan, and so I chose the $25 plan which includes: 100 minutes, unlimited after 7, and unlimited inc and out texts. But it says on the very bottom, adds $2 every month for a paper invoice fee. Is this a good plan for a beginner? And what is the paper invoice fee?

^ paper invoice fee is what it is. a fee for getting your invoice printed on a piece of paper and mailed to you at the end of your billing cycle?

I like to suggest that you take up some reading comprehension classes before you sign up for anything..

OT: That seems like a good plan. Do you have to sign a contract?

Go to koodo, no contracts, no extra fees, pay for what u pick plus tax
25 bucks a month gets you:
100 minutes, persecond billing
Unlimited text incoming and out
7pm evenings and weekends.
Visit lougheed koodo, awesome service.

I was planning on goin with wind, but I heard from friends they have shitty coverage, and rent a certain amount of towers from rogers

dont go prepaid...
there is a running joke that prepaid is what celluar companies run on.

if you want a budget phone, go fido, koodo or solo.
all three are budget companies.
solo does not have anything exciting for phones, but they do not charge for activation and no "GRF"..... plus all plans above $20 gives you unlimited text

in regards for being 19, you need to be that age to sign a contract. however, you can have your parents set a phone up for you. just get them to put you as an authorized user. that way you can change plan/features, hardware upgrades, etc...
