T-dawg Detailed: 2005 Mercedes Benz S55 AMG

This gorgeous Mercedes Benz S-class was detailed a few weeks ago. Equipped with all the goodies from the factory such as air suspension and a supercharged 5.5L V8 engine, this beast has been majorly tuned and is currently pushing about 650hp/650tq at the wheels (Stock: 510hp/520tq), and is aided in braking by a pair of monstrous 8-piston calipers on the front and 6-pistons on the rear. It has been tested on the dragstrip, pulling in 1/4 mile times in the high-11 seconds range, which is not bad for a car that weighs over 5000lb and has luxuries such as massage seats and heated steering!

The condition of the paint was extremely swirled up, with heavy spider-webbing and light to medium scratches all over the body. It seems that the previous detailer who polished the car prior had left some light hologramming in the paint, as well as excess wax residue in all the cracks around the doors and windows. Owner wanted a full interior/exterior detail on the car, and it was agreed that a double-stage machine polish would be performed on the paint.

Enough with the blabbering, I'll let the pictures do the talking. Total time: 20 hours.

Car looks clean from far?

Closer look:

And another one:

Car covered with a layer of dust:

Wheels were fairly new, but could use some work:

Close up of calipers:

Car had been parked under a tree recently, which left little spots of sap all over the paint, and the occasional bird poop etching:

And the wax residue left by previous detailer:

Gave the car a good spray down then washed and clayed:

Wheels after washing:

Calipers washed and sealed:

Time to inspect the paint. Today's forecast...swirls:

Swirls on hood:

More swirls:

On trunklid:

On to the polishing. Trunklid before:

Trunklid after:

Lower door panel before:

Lower door panel after:

Rear quarter panel before:

Rear quarter panel after:

Rear bumper before:

Rear bumper after:

B-pillars before:

B-pillars after:

After the heavy compounding was complete, car was polished and the paint was refined before being sealed and waxed. Here are the final results.

Hood:

Trunklid:

Remember this before?

Here is the opposite C-pillar after:

One interior picture. Check out the legroom:

360 Forged wheels:

All done:

Finally after 20 hours:

Thanks for looking!

Wow nice work, that car is a BEAST

How did you go about polishing the B pillars? Did you just use a small pad? Use only half of a 6" pad?

Thanks Clinton and Mugen!

Yaminashi- The B-pillars were polished with a 3" pad with a lighter polish on a slightly lower speed to prevent burning through the coated plastic.

How would I go about polishing my b pillars if I only have 6" pads?

Supafly- Thanks! And it sounds like sex too

Yaminashi- I wouldn't recommend it, but it's not entirely impossible. Just tape all around the B-pillars and use lower speed. Do you have a random orbital or rotary polisher?

StevenDuang- Remember that modding is all about putting one's personal touch on the car so that it is unique to them, not just to make it faster. That's the reason we lower our cars and throw rims on them. Most people just can't afford it do it on S-classes

What worries me most is just sling from the pad since more than half will pretty much be floating in mid air and only 1/4 of the pad will actually be polishing
(if that makes sense)

I'm using a porter cable

Yaminashi- Yes I know what you mean, which is why I would recommend having all the right tools for the job. It is much safer since you are using a PC, just make sure you have a backing plate with velcro strong enough that the pad will not detach itself off of when polishing, since there won't be much pressure on it. Definitely don't recommend doing it with a rotary since most of the pad will be against the outer edge of the pillars and risk burning paint.

bossbee- Thanks man!

Thanks, I guess I'll have to skip the b-pillars for now

ShangoAshe: Thanks for the kind words Q!

Yaminashi: Just go out and buy a couple 3" pads and a backing plate and you're golden. Makes life easier on A- & B-pillars, as well as above door handles, around vents on front bumpers, etc.

Here's an example on an A-pillar with a 3" pad

I hear ya there, I was wondering how I'd go about polishing with a 5" pad just above my doors lol

Gonna have to head out to kens tomorrow last minute so I can get my work started tomorrow

Yaminashi: We might be tag teaming a car tomorrow, so swing by and say hi!

dhari: The depth of the paint was hidden under the top layer of defects in the clear coat, which explained the lack of shine before. All gone now!

Super Dipper: Thanks for the inquiry! Unfortunately I am not an advertiser on RS, so I'd rather not post pricing publicly. Feel free to send me a PM and I'll give you all the information you need. Cheers!
