BMW maintenance People at my work always tell me don't get a bmw, the maintenance will rape my wallet. How much exactly do people spend a year on maintenance? Are they exaggerating? I'm more worried about my insurance if I ever get a beamer. Can anyone give me a price range on maintenance, I know it varies? Posted via RS Mobile |
If you're willing and able to do a bit of the minor maintenance yourself, and you don't mind spending a bit of time of forums to diagnose problems, it shouldn't be *that* expensive. On the other hand, if you need to take it in to the dealer each time something small goes wrong because you don't have the time/skills to DIY, it will add up quickly.. |
if you have connections, you can get "places" to do your shit for 1/2 or 1/3 the cost. the BMW dealer will always charge the most.... it's all about husling / |
if its a lease or you get a maintenance package and its in a warranty, its a pretty good deal. once the warranty is done though.. thats a whole other story. |
it'll only cost you about 50$/yr for maintenance 40$ for oil and 10$ for oil filter and maybe 4$ more for windshield fluid |
If you buy new or if the car is within 4 years old, maintenance is free at the dealership. |

maintenance on a BMW less than 10yrs old and under 100,000kms is relatively inexpensive....less than $2000 per yr....inspection II is the most expensive at approx. 80K kms....cost approx. $2K. Unscheduled repairs are expensive...if you follow BMW maintenance schedule and change, belts, oils, fluids regularly you should not have big bills If you want piece of mind, buy a aftermarket warranty. |
i bought my 3 series last year and ive spent about 120 on oil changes, 600 on front and rear brakes. bought the car used so i replaced the tires for about 900 :( insurance is about 250/month too. but its worth it. i love the way it drives. i think it looks damn good too lol |

Newer BMW maintenance is expensive because they make everything computerized and inaccessible, so the majority and typical car shops cannot work on it, and you are stuck with either a) going back to the dealer for servicing, or b) going to shops that are willing to invest $100K+ on equipments so they can work on these cars. (and naturally they will have to charge more to recoup the cost of their investment) Actually...if you compare dealer servicing, BMW maintenance isn't anymore expensive than other makes. I.e., replacing the brake pad/rotors on my 06 330i at a BMW dealer cost about the same as a 09 caravan at a dodge dealer! |
and if you are really concerned about maintenance, just get a new one. 4 years free maintenance....and I think a brand new 323i is cheaper than a TSX or IS250 |
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, its not the parts that are expensive its the labor on euros that hikes up the price? |

i had 4 BMWs, and have 3 now. no problems. one thing i discovered though in the recent years - the more expensive and faster the car you buy, the more expensive the parts get. Labour charges can be addressed once you find a good mechanic. |
picked up a 01 740i that was in moderate shape half a year ago. spent about 2000 on tires, suspension, trims, leaks, electrics, brakes, misc. i estimate i have to spend another 1-2k in the next half year for the car to be like the day it left the factory. this is used as a family car had a e30 for over a year now, spent less than 1k on maintenance. replaced original alternator, replaced some seals, sensors, replaced some vacuum hoses, changed the fluids, tires, etc. this is my dd. working on a 540i6 now. its in ok shape. needs suspension bushings, engine/trans mounts, steering linkage, some sensors, seals and exhaust. estimate to need 2k of parts in the next year or so to be perfect. this is a project car i'm working on. it really varies which bmw you plan on getting. the 80's stuff you can wrench on it yourself no problems. the 90's stuff you can wrench on it fine, but having obdii tools and a gt1 helps a lot. 00 stuff that are gadget intense can get tiresome if you want everything to work right. most need special tools to diag and repair. its not just about swapping out defective stuff anymore. lots of reprogramming to do and as a diy'er you need to know your computer stuff. 10+ stuff, its still under warranty so its fine but once those are out of warranty. can't imagine the cost to maintain them. especially the f01 and f10 with the turbos. |
Expensive only if you go to the dealers for maintence. We stop going to dealers after warranty. Oil change should cost 80-120 depending on shops. I've only replace oxygen sensor & a ball joint for $300 on my 2001 X5, and dad replace his 745Li window regulator for $500. Thats about it. This is for about 4 years ownership. Hope this helps. Both car are now just over 100,000kms |
