I guess this mainly benefits users that don't have retention plans.
Bang on.

My Blackberry plan with Rogers comes out to $50.xx with all taxes and fees included. I'm on the old EPP and I have a $20 add-on which gives me unlimited text, voice mail, and 500 megs of data.

Until Wind can come out with something better than this, I'm not moving.

My thoughts:

- Why buy out a phone at full price when you can get it for lot less or free on a contract? Chances are that you are still going to use a phone after 2 or 3 years anyways. Not to mention, that you can always change your plan to any of the plans including most promotional plans even if you are in a contract. Worst case scenario you need to cancel, you just buying out the phone that you got for free or discounted. Most smartphones discount on a contract are over $400 which is the maximum cancellation fee anyways. So no contract is not a big deal if any...

- Most people use a similar patterns of call every month anyways, some would be 500 minutes, some more, some less...unlimited doesn't really mean much unless you always go over or change of pattern. For example, if someone only use 100 minutes then why pay $35 for unlimited when you can pay $20? It's the same with data plans - 90% of customers if not more uses less than 500mb, again, unlimited to these customers don't make a big difference

- A smartphone performs differently on different networks, it's like your computer internet on Highspeed vs Dialup

- I'm using a Smartphone plan that is $65/month. It includes 200 minutes, nights & weekends 6pm-7am, 500 text, unlimited incoming text, but most importantly, i have unlimited to 5 numbers across canada which takes away the usage and long distance of the people i talk to most of the time. Wind Mobile does not have an of the FAB 5 or 10 plans which means a Wind Mobile customer don't have a cheap option of calling LD from their plans.

- Student plans with FAB 10 are always the best value, because they usually come with 200 minutes, unlimited nights at 6pm and 10 numbers to call and text unlimited. Again, most of us call patterns are the same and we usually only chat long periods of a group of people

- The big 3's all have corporate rate plans and retention offers which includes features like Call Display, Voicemail, text.. $0.10 Canadian LD rates, Discounted monthly plans usually priced from $20 to $25/month and data is usually $20 to $25 for 500mb. That means the end cost is cheaper than Wind Mobile.

I support competition, but Wind Mobile is still new, the rates aren't that attractive if you take into consideration the cost of your hardware upfront (forking out couple hundred dollars to buy your phone), the smartphone plans being similiar pricing to the other regular plans in the market, and to run it on a slower and smaller network with restrictions to only home zones which there is no firm dates on when the completion of the new expanded home zones would be in place...; my conclusion, not competitve enough and as a new entrant.

1st thought: I agree that if you are gonna be around in Canada for longer than 3 years, it would be worth while signing a contract for a free phone/subsidized phone. Then again, if you have the time to do the calculations, your actually paying more for the subsidized phone in comparison to buying the phone out right. I don't know that many people who uses the same phone for 3 year, so it would mean that your gonna keep resigning a contract with your provider. It really depends what you wanna do as the consumer. For myself, i like to switch my phones regularly, and i don't see a point in paying 6.95$ towards my subsidized phone every month. If plans w/ contracts start to become more competitive like in the states, then i may consider signing a contract.

2. Your right about the similar pattern, but then again, patterns change, thats life. But then ask yourself this, why pay for the same amount of service when your getting less? its not about getting unlimited or 200minutes and being able to use it up or not, its the fact that some providers are ripping you to shreds for 40$ when you can get much more for it. Its value, you want the most out of your spending, no?

3. smartphone performs differently on different networks? its like highspeed vs dial up?....im confused about this one. your thoughts are vague

4. wind has 45$ unlimited accross canada...to ANYONE, not just 5 or 10 "FABS"...unless your smoking something, then wind's 45$ plan destroys your 65$ 200min, n/w,400text, 5 ld numbers accross canada.

5. student fab plans are a joke in my opinion, your paying extra for call display and stupid bs stuff...wind and moblicity's plans are all you can eat, with pretty much the same pricing

6. can you give an example of retention offers that is cheaper than wind mobile? i only know of Fido that can match wind's plans, but not BEAT their plans...and off course you would have to sign a contract in order to get these deals. Doesn't make sense why you would sign a contract for the same thing if you ask me.

I hope you do support Wind and the other new entrant....not competitive enough?....im assuming that you don't know that wind's 45$ plan is UNLIMIted calling to anyone in canada, not just wind's subcribers. text, call disp, voicemail
all included.

My thoughts:

I don't think you fully understand what wind's offering, check it out...

By changing your plan or hardware upgrade, you are also extended/renewing your contract. So if you want to change your plan or HUP and you have 6 months left, now you just tacked on another 3 years.. was it worth it? if people think its worth it, then it worth it.

- Most people use a similar patterns of call every month anyways, some would be 500 minutes, some more, some less...unlimited doesn't really mean much unless you always go over or change of pattern. thats why theres different plans, Wind has 3 plans which are pretty good..
1 with less minutes BC wide, 1 with unlimited BC wide and 1 with unlimited Canada wide!
i choose the $15 plan with 5 unlimited tx... $20 is good for me.. plus it also included call features that cost money from the Big 3.. im not sure if they now include it free..

- A smartphone performs differently on different networks, it's like your computer internet on Highspeed vs Dialup

its not the smartphone, its the network.. if the network fast, then the phone will be fast...

- I'm using a Smartphone plan that is $65/month. Wind Mobile does not have an of the FAB 5 or 10 plans which means a Wind Mobile customer don't have a cheap option of calling LD from their plans.

why would you need a Fab 5 or 10 when with WIND its unlimited CANADA WIDE.. its like FAB 1mllion if you have 1 million friends all over Canada..

- Student plans with FAB 10 are always the best value, because they usually come with 200 minutes, unlimited nights at 6pm and 10 numbers to call and text unlimited. Again, most of us call patterns are the same and we usually only chat long periods of a group of people

So how much is the Student plans with call featuers?
for $35 from Wind, its ALL you can TALK ALL day long anywhere in BC...
im guesing with a student play, after you tack on other features, its close to the same.. but not BC Wide!

For retention plans, you need to be a good customer that pays on time and not calling in asking for freebies all the time, then you would get a WAY better plan then an average joe.

a lot of people buy phones from non carriers.. have you taken that into account? so are you saying you never bought a phone from a friend or off a site? are they discounted?
Though it may seem it similar, i can assure you its not.. IF you travel to edmonton, calgary or even Toronto. Your with the Big 3 and you use your phone... you would be charged for Roaming, right.. BUT with Wind Mobile, ITS FREE.. coz your still in an area COVERED by Wind.. so how is this similar with the big 3???

Why are we even considering wind when you get no reception in parts of surrey and ubc? Honestly until the their network builds up in western canada, there should be no reason why anyone should sign up with wind.
Bell and rogers have plans where you get national fab 10s and 500mb data included for $50 bucks. Besides, the average smart phone usage in canada is 100-200mb / month. Why the hell would you need unlimited data?
Wind is getting all the popularity since their the first of the many newcomers that will flood our market in the next few years, SOLO is rebranding and chatter is out.
Again, until wind builds up their network "officially" into coquitlam and surrey, signing up with them is stupid.

^ Depends on where you live and stuff. My friends and I go to Surrey what, 3x a year? Van/Bby/Rmd is good enough for those who live and work downtown, for example. Add that to 50% off for 6 mos, and that was enough for several of them to jump ship.

Yes the coverage area is small, but as with any network, you gotta start somewhere right?

IMO the data thing is psychological. Many of my iPhone friends don't watch YouTube and other multimedia stuff simply because they're too afraid of going over and getting killed at the end of the month.

For $5 more you get Unlimited Talk Canada Wide to more then just 10 people! and you can get the 500mb data that comes $55

so for $5 more you rather limit yourself to only 10 people.. well if you dont have more then 10 friends accross canada, then sure save the $5..

what if you went to toronto? what are you gona do, buy a sim card and pop it into your rogers phone? Its free with Wind... you arent even looking at the big picture...

If everyone thinks like you do, how is Wind going to continue to grow?

Of the 3 newest carriers, Wind, Public Mobile and Mobilcity.. WIND is the only National one.. so they are doing their best...

I find fetched's argument to be weak
by saying WIND has no legs cuz its on AWS isn't going to cut it. I will admit, i thot that as well, but looking past the tech and into the business, WIND will grow, fight and try its best to dance with the big3.

The fact is, WIND needs time to grow and mature, baby steps need to be taken in order for the company to grow. A majority of the WIND promo stuff is used to attract customers who need JUST A PHONE. Its cheap, theres alot of value, they dont have to pay $12 ontop of their base $25 or $35 plan with the big three. The phones are simple, affordable and they work. Im certain, I can sell a $100 phone to a customer looking for just phone and no commitment. Thats the market they are trying to secure.

As for smartphones, the majority of them on the market is HSPA compatible, but TMOBILE has had smartphones on AWS for awhile now, they might not be the most popular carrier of choice in the US, but they are much better than ATT will ever be down south.

The Smartphone market most likely isn't WIND's top priority, because the reality of the market is that the big3 will always have the upper hand due to devices available. Tmobile has a few smartphones, they function well. The Android platform is great and has support for all the bands.

So when WIND is ready to pump smartphones for consumers, they will convert those who havent jumped the gun and dont want to pay up to play the game with the big3.

as for data usage, yes the average customer use only 300ish mb a month, but keep in mind the smartphone application market and processes are growing day by day and those require the use of mobile data. It will only push the bar higher as the application gets better.

my5..my10 fab5..what are you..in highschool? some housewife who only calls the kids/husband/parents? gimmie a break, My5/10 is bullshit. If all your friends/family is on Rogers/Fido, network calling is UNLIMITED LOCALLY TO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS

Everyone has different uses for cellphones. So no plan is better than the other. Some people prefer paying 400 500 for a smartphone and get unlimited talking n data. While others prefer 400 500 dollar smart phones for free and getting less data and minutes which they don't need in the first place.
That is why my argument is about the range problem wind has. Canada wide calling? Do they even have 10 percent the coverage bell has in alberta? Before worrying about if I'm going over my minutes, I'm gonna worry about where I have reception. Honestly I'd rather pay extra for better coverage, but everyone is different right?

your complaint is everything about Wind, from phone to coverage..
They just launched last year, they have reached over 100k subscribers already, which is good. Im sure by the end of the year, they coverage will be almost twice the size.
Wind is backed by one of Europes top telecom company, they are here indefinitely.

Phone wise, yes they are lacking a bit. They are getting some andriod phones for sure. Wind is here to cater to wide range of people, which is why they had forums and ask people what they wanted. Wind cant have plans for everyone, but for the general public.

their voice plans are pretty good compared to others.
Data wise, im not a heavy user and i tried the charged plan which is 500mb.. i didnt used 100mb... so i took it off..
even with rogers data plan, i rarely used it.

i agree they arent the cheapest compared to retention/grandfather plans.
All their plans include calling features which are extra with the big 3, unless of course you get a retention plan.

Just a small tidbit. Alcatel-Lucent has heavily subsidized Wind's core network hence why features are free but at some point, that will change. Typically, fees for calling features are charged on a per-user/license basis.

you need to get your facts stright before you start telling people they are wrong.

the Hardware upgrades differ per carrier.
for example, Bell will knock off the remaining time on the original contract if you do an early upgrade. ie. your contract expires on December 15, but you go to a store and do an upgrade on September 15. the remaining 5 months are taken off. your new contract will expire September 15 in three years.

There is no roaming when you are in Canada for the big three and their smaller companies. If you are customer of the before mentioned, roaming only occurs when you are OUTSIDE Cananda.

Wind charges roaming because you are OUTSIDE of your HOME zone.
