| Those Who Doubt Wind Mobile.....Consider...
Hey, I myself have been an avid fido customer for over 8 years . Not only myself but every member in my household has been as well. I've recently made the Jump to Wind. Originally being from the UK and constantly making trips between the UK and Canada, It always crossed my mind, when will Mobile in Canada be like Mobile in the UK + Europe. When I mean like, Im not just talkin about rates and service wise....I'm talkin about it being such a competitive market.
[ I could go on and write paragraphs about how cheap things like Data and other mobile options are extremely cheap and affordable, but im not going to get into that here, because thats not the point i'm trying to make. ]
Now on to the Point......
So Along comes Wind...In short...A company who has finally brought cheap, affordable rates to the Canadian Mobile industry. Now by all means its clearly visible non of the Big 3's plans can match Wind's plans + cheap add-ons in any way.
I've heard alot of people talkin about WIND and many of these people who are able to make the switch ( Those who are not under contract ) and are chosing not to because they are not properly in the know and have a heard a bunch of different things about WIND that they don't know what to do.
1. Many people say, Oh...these deals are only good in your "Home-Zone" once you are out of it they charge you $0.25 cents a minute. These Home-Zones (In Toronto,Calgary,Edmonton, Ottawa and Vancouver once fully completed) cover generally the same area that Rogers/Fido covers you at when they consider you "local"....and guess how much Rogers/Fido charge when you out of your "local" service area...$0.25, so in that point you are no better off.
2. Another thing alot of people are saying is oh the reception isnt good yet, problems like dropped calls etc etc. This was largely true in the launch of the Toronto Network as well, but they soon resolved it....so for those who think this... Hang on tight for a bit and give it abit of time and then once everythings running to your satisfaction make the jump over to Wind.
3. WIND is great because they offer all the same services and Add-Ons they do on prepaid basis as they do on a postpaid basis....Thats a BIG THING!
What network do you know in Canada that you can get Data Packages on a pay as you go service....AND one that is Unlimited as well? Non
What network do you know in Canada that you can have access to Blackberry Services on a Pay as you go??....Even Kodoo's blackberry add-on is on a postpaid basis only!!
Like, this will make mobile more affordable to teens and students and those without a credit rating.
I mean teens who are already Pay As You Go users would go Crazy being able to access blackberry on Pay as you go and to BBM people.
4. [THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER]
Many argue "Oh I'm going to wait, my current provider will come out with something to beat it anyways" .... This maybe true, but This attitude is what will ruin any hopes of us keeping cheaper and affordable cellular service in the future! Think about it.....
ROGERS is already coming out with a service called "Chat-r" that is also offering unlimited mobile In designated "Home Areas" at affordable rates, also both on a prepaid and postpaid basis. This is in the short term is being put in place to be competitive... with the new combers but in the long term is to eliminate the new comers such as WIND.
They will only be offering unlimited Voice + Text, and the service will be 2G only. If everyone signed up for the BIG 3's counter offers, such as "CHAT-R". Wind would lack customers and eventually go out of businesss. Wind And Other Newcomers going out of business would mean that they no longer pose a threat to the BIG 3, at that point Rogers will retire the "CHAT-R" service, and go back to what they are good at.... CHARGING RIDICOUSLY HIGH PRICES! because they will be able to again!
Chat-R is what's called in Marketing a "Fighting Brand". By definition A fighting brand is essentially a temporary business launched with the intent to kill off the competition. Once they Kill Off Wind and the other new entrants. They Will Kill the "Chat-R" service.
Notice How Rogers created a MNVO (Virtual Operator) that is seperate from Rogers Wireless? You know why? because once they suceed in beating the competition they are going to shutdown the service... that way people cannot cry about grandfathering rights to the cheap plan once because the plan wasn't directly with Rogers but with a seperate operation that will no longer be in operation.....
hopefully this long...but educational thread will help people actually understand Wind and its importance to all of us as Wireless consumers.

I think it would be stupid to be in a Wind zone, and not get Wind. Of course, many people are locked into 2-3 year contracts, which is pretty much the same thing

they launched few months ago... it does cost a lot to put towers and stuff.. not to mention they are launching in multiple cities, if its just in GVA, then it wouldnt be a problem.

I am all for competition. I guess for the most of us who are locked to contracts, it's somewhat of a good thing as it gives us time to see how Wind evolves in this competitive market while they try to scoop up the ones with no contracts or ones who want to jump ship anyways.
Apparently, Chat-r will not offer smart phones.

I have about 1.5 years left on my current contract so hopefully everything on WIND's side of things will be fully resolved by then. Like Preemo said, this is the perfect timing for those of us that are locked into contracts because it gives us time to see how well they progress in the market.
It's great to know they're backed by Orascom Telecom Holding in Egypt. I believe they have more capital then Rogers does lol so they're here to stay.

will be considering WIND when my contract is up later this year.
For the people that are on WIND - how is their customer service?

I guess Wind attracts more of the older audience or the people that does not care what kind of phones they get since it's limited to only a few selection of phones. They use a UTMS network which is on a totally different bandwidth than other sim cards provider. eg. The iPhone won't work even if it's unlocked

I've been with Roger's for 2 years now. Pretty satisfied as I have never had a problem. Big step moving over from Telus. I pay a pretty hefty phone bill (about $100 a month all in). Basically i have everything almost unlimited, atleast to my standards. Within the past 2 years, i have never had an additional charge for anything. A few of my friends have switched to wind mobile. Sure it seems like a growing company, but at this point I am not one bit interested to switch companies. My friend's who have wind mobile have been getting the worst reception ever. Whenever i call them, the call wont connect at all and would go straight to voicemail. When I actually get a hold of them, the call will then get all these messed up noises in which i have no choice but to end the call. At this point I am not impressed by Wind Mobile and this situation to me seems like "you pay for what you get". Hopefully they will grow to fix their flaws and become sucessful enough to beat the big 3.

Wind doesn't have a good selection of phones, but they do have one of the best out there - Nexus One AWS version.

There is alot of places wind won't cover; UBC is not in their wind zone, and the reception at SFU is bad; even thou they say they will have complete coverage by end of 2010; but i highly doubt it; wind is in Toronto for awhile and they still haven't gotten the ideal amount of subscribers they wanted in their business plan;
competition is good; b/c of wind, and mobilicity(which will soon come to vancouver); rogers has come out with chat-r;

just checked windmobile's pricing again, did they change??
cause
Voice plan: Always Talk (unlimited calling to any number province wide)= $35
Data plan add on: Charged Blackberry (500mb data) = $20
Text: Canada/U.S. Unlimited Text = $5
Voicemail: Voicemail = $5
Total: $65 + tax and whatever fees if they have any, thats not much different than the similar plan i currently have with rogers.
i COULD go with the Chat plan with is $15 a month, but thats only unlimited wind-wind and 0.25/minute to anyone else, And the Social BlackBerry for $10 but thats basically for facebook and bbm, which i lose the ability to browse the internet.
