HTC Desire Officially Announced

The long wait is over. The HTC Desire for Telus has officially been announced. No release date as of yet, but speculation leans towards late july/early august.

Too bad Android 2.2 won't come from HTC until Q4. Wonder what the pricing of this will be.

Pretty much yeah, that way you won't be paying for it for 3 years. Plus you can get the AWS version and use it on Wind.

You can just install a good (or even better, LauncherPro is pretty awesome) launcher and you'll be set. The only thing I use on the Desire that isn't on the N1 is FriendStream. You can even get the clock/weather widget that is an exact replica of the Sense one for free.

I quite dislike the soft touch buttons and trackball on the nexus one. I've yet to use the optical pads that HTC uses, but physical trackballs i'm going to stay clear of after my berry.

True the optical tracker is better, but I can't remember the last time I have used it in the 2 or 3 months I've had the phone. There really is no reason for it to exist at all, so ball or optical is irrelevant to me.

I thought I would prefer real buttons as well, but after using the N1 for a bit, I think soft buttons are more convenient.

I'm totally happy with the Desire, but the Nexus One is just as good (right now it's better, because it is Froyo)

199. So off contract price is gonna be around 599. Maybe Telus users will dump them for cheap on craigslist after they upgrade their plan.

Pricing Released... kind of.
$79 promo on 3 yrs.

And a little more info
Quote:
The Android-powered HTC desire will be hitting TELUS soon. Yesterday we found hidden prices in the source code of the TELUS Desire web page… but today we’ve got a retail inventory screenshot of the 3-year contract price. How does $79.99 sound to you?

If this is the actual price that TELUS will be releasing the Desire at it’ll do incredibly well. The Desire runs on Android 2.1 with talk of being upgraded to 2.2, has a 3.7 inch LCD display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor and a 5 megapixel camera. We also hear that the no-contract price is going to be around the $449.99 mark (not confirmed).

$450's not bad at all. Mind you Telus won't just sell you the phone if you're not a customer of theirs.

Comparing this to a iphone or htc legend, would there be a significant speed difference?

Desire will be faster by quite a bit. 1ghz vs 600mhz on the legend. Not to mention older cpu on the legend

But the Legend has lower resolution, which means it 'gets away' a bit more with the lower spec CPU. It was pretty snappy when I tested it out, but I just didn't like the low res screen.

BTW the new Desire will most likely use a Sony LCD panel instead of Samsung's AMOLED. If it's the same one as the X10, that kind of sucks
