No, Android phones aren't in "jail" so don't need to be rooted or "jailbroken" to install software. The exception is some AT&T phones.

Gnomes 08-28-2010 08:18 PM

Oh jeez, I hope roger's wont be "jailed" seeing how AT&T's is samsung captivate and so is roger's

I don't think so. Unless it's the AT&T captivate which prevents sideloading. But there's many ways around it. You should be able to just install Astro from the market and start dumping apk files onto the phone.

!MiKrofT 08-28-2010 11:27 PM

What I'd do is actually blow away the stock at&t/rogers rom after rooting and unlocking and install one of the newer JM6 i9000 roms from XDA. Nothing will be locked :)

Make sure the 3 button mode is not disabled.

It apparently able to fix your phone if you brick it.

u can root using adb as well, but that requires u to use terminal commands and have ur phone connected through usb. having 3 button mode is alot less complicated, and it could also save ur phone if u ever happen to brick it

Yes. XDA is THE resource for Android stuff. I suggest you read through that thread.

Ignoring the stuff with the frequencies (the Bell vibrant is on the Bellus/Roido networks), this is the comparo which has the miniscule differences.

http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3...&idPhone2=3416

Mainly:
Shell differences
Radio (Vib Y)
Doc viewers (Vib Y)
# of accessories available (Vib > Cap)

Gnomes 08-30-2010 07:17 PM

^Aside from the 3g frequency being different, it would appear vibrant beats captivate. Why is so many people waiting for captivate?

It is because of the 3g frequency being different. If it wasn't for that, and me being on Rogers, id pick up a vibrant.

MarkyMark 08-30-2010 09:29 PM

Its pretty much which you think looks better. The Vibrant has more of an iphone ripoff look going on, and its all plastic. The Captivate has a metal battery cover and imo has an overall better look, although i've yet to hold one.

!MiKrofT 08-30-2010 10:55 PM

Captivate also has more capacitive buttons. I like the look if it more. I held the ATT one and it feels just as solid.

'Cause if I wanted a phone that mimics the look of the iPhone, I'd simply get another iPhone. Besides, I prefer the look of the Captivate over the Vibrant.

^ Sweet, heading down south sometime this week. Going to get a hands on feel of a bunch of devices I'm interested in right now.

J____ 08-30-2010 11:54 PM

better battery life on vibrant, extra 2gig sd card with vibrant. and i remember seeing a video showing vibrant performing better on something, either video or graphics cant remember...

Just to let everyone know.
Samsung Galaxy S is on national back order as of now.

TOS'd 08-31-2010 12:09 AM

^ But thats the vibrant right? Since Captivate isnt out yet here..

u have the t-mobile vibrant selected.

the bell vibrant is closer to the i9000 than the t959 in terms physical appearance and radio frequencies. Look at the home buttons at the bottom (3 button vs 4). Note that there are reports that the t-mobile will work on ATT 3G when unlocked

http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3...&idPhone2=3408

one interesting note is that the vibrant has a front camera but the captivate doesn't (on these specs)

bell vibrant comes w/ 8gb built-in instead of 16

Tmobile Vibrant only works with AT&T in areas that have 1900.

Bell Vibrant has a front camera
T-Mobile Vibrant does not have a front camera
At&t/Rogers Captivate does not have a front camera
