For those who has GPS issue.
Please, try this setting.......It works for me very well.

Note: Copy down your original setting before change any settings. Just in Case....lol

1. Disable “Use Wireless Networks”
1. Navigate to Settings > Location & Security > uncheck the box next to “Use Wireless Networks”
2. Go to the phone and dial *#3214789650#
1. This step throws you into LBSTestMode menu
3. In the LBSTestMode menu change “Operation Mode” to MS Based
4. In the LBSTestMode menu, find “SUPL/CP Settings” and change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 (DO NOT use www. in front of supl)
5. REBOOT
6. Enable “Use Wireless Networks”
* Navigate to Settings > Location & Security > check the box next to “Use Wireless Networks”

ughh
hopefully theres a fix for this othing soon either by rooting or an official update

Does it actually have a full GPS? Or does it realy solely on cel towers?

Tim Budong 11-19-2010 08:01 PM

i have yet to try...i didnt pop a SIM in

!MiKrofT 11-19-2010 08:45 PM

Does the GPS work without the sim card? That should be an indication.

J____ 11-19-2010 10:59 PM

i dont think you can do anything in the phone wihtout a simcard no?

!MiKrofT 11-19-2010 11:41 PM

Most smartphones still work without sim cards.

Just make sure you have a Data plan. this "fix" only works if you solely rely on cell towers for positioning.

fyi there is now a doc ROM specifically for Bell Vibrants using the leaked Bell 2.2 beta

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846237

i held off rooting/flashing until now, and this rom is actually pretty fast even with lagfixes disabled

Oleophobic 11-22-2010 02:15 AM

thanks
time to move on from doc 7.6.2

for those who want a decent offline GPS (ie: maps are stored in phone... when on it only uses the GPS receiver for signal - so you can use this all over the world without getting dinged for data)

I suggest Aura by Sygic. It's smooth, beautiful, and extremely stable.
I'm not sure if i can post up "free" links up here, so if you want link PM me

!MiKrofT 11-22-2010 02:04 PM

Also copilot works great. It has TTS as well which most android GPS apps don't seem to have currently.

CP.AR 11-23-2010 10:28 AM

Mine's fine... did you download the maps using the installed "Aura Downloader" or did you grab the maps off the forum as well

Make sure you download everything off Aura Downloader

i used copilot 8 when i was on a roadtrip to the US. maybe i was using an older version or older map or something, but the routes it was taking me made no sense whatsoever.

oh and having seperate Canada and USA maps = FAIL for me.

i installed those 2 apk's from the forum. then downloaded a 215mb file and map from aura downloader.

i was running on wifi and not gps though because i was inside and couldnt get a lock. would that effect it?

!MiKrofT 11-23-2010 01:36 PM

Odd the routes it showed on mine when I was in portland were pratically the same as the ones on our garmin GPS.

hm... that shouldn't affect it... what rom are you running right now?

Jacka 11-23-2010 05:53 PM

Anyone knows what the difference between Captivate, Galaxy S, and Vibrant. I am considering getting a new phone, but not sure what to know, these or HTC desire.

obsidian v3

SkinnyPupp 11-24-2010 04:47 AM

Thinking about switching from HTC Desire. I wanted to get a Desire HD, but they are almost impossible to get (for a reasonable price)

Are you guys pretty happy with your Galaxy S?

CP.AR 11-24-2010 08:38 AM

^ extremely. Though If you already have experience with a Desire - I would say the desire is slightly snappier

SkinnyPupp 11-24-2010 05:05 PM

I'd probably install a very basic rom anyway. The Samsung SHOULD be quicker, since it has a better CPU. Of course, Samsung software is shit, so I can imagine why it would feel sluggish.

I've been using the free RMAPS. Needed to "extract" maps from googlemap. The entire lower mainland with full zoom took up 2gb of storage. Seemed like a lot of wasted space, plus no navigation support (for offline). It only tells me where I am on the map.

MarkyMark 11-25-2010 07:09 AM

My captivate is a piece of shit, everyday it shuts off by itself, this morning it shut off 3 consecutive times within 5 minutes...gonna get a replacement me thinks

^ That issue is happening with the Bell variant as well. Buddy of mine is complaining about random shut offs.

It happened to me once.
