Once they come out with a 4.5 inch super amoled you'll want that instead, and I thought a 4 inch screen was the perfect size when I got my galaxy Posted via RS Mobile |

IMO 4" for me is already pretty big. 4.5" would be too big for mobility.

i read somewhere in xda forum today that samsungUSA is releasing a new app that restore your gps setting back to default but i think is for captivate only. Some say that is suppose to fix the deterioration over time. And there is people who said that when the GPS is out of wack. Just reset it with that app and is suppose to fix the problem. However i don't think is available in canada yet.

Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856509 | it's out already, doesnt work for me =(
nothing works so far to fix my gps. Only thing i havent tried is changing the kernel.
Seems like it's gotta be rom related. Before i rooted and flashed obsidian it worked ok. Now it takes forever to see the satellites and never locks onto any...

my GPS is still working fine after all this time (went down to the states over the weekend and it's been pretty reliable, except when it's on a fresh lock...)
but hell the GPS still blows regardless - my mom just got a HTC desire and I took both the phones out for a bit of a test... It took the desire about 15 seconds to get a lock, but the galaxy took a good 2.5 minutes...

Hey I don't recall anyone mentioning it but is there any crapware on roger's captivate? Also what is the gps issue...It doesn't lock on properly? Are you guys using it without data? My friend's waiting for it to go on sale before she buys so yeah. Thanks to anyone that can help.

For some reason everyone thinks that the GPS on cellphones require data...
the GPS on all phones today are FULLY FLEDGED GPS DEVICES, the same as your TomTom, Garmin, Mio etc... standalone GPS units
That being said though, data CAN be used to stream maps onto the device, and to use something called "A-GPS", whereby the phone uses tower triangulation in addition to using satellites.
But to avoid using streamed maps (ie: google navigation) you can install standalone 3rd party SatNav apps such as Aura by Sygic, Mobile Navigator by Navigon and CoPilot, where the maps are stored locally on the phone's SD Card/internal memory. TO further avoid being charged for data, you can also turn off the A-GPS feature by deselecting "Use Wireless Networks" in the phone.
Now back to the Galaxy....
The problem is that the lock is slow... on say, my HTC Desire, which takes about 10-20 seconds to get a lock, the Galaxy takes around a good 2-3 minutes. All is good afterwards though, but it seems to be a mixed bag (some people claim they never get a lock, or that the lock keeps dropping)

Sorry I typed that before I went to work. Yeah I know data isn't needed in gps, rather it's for downloading the maps or assisting in it to get a lock faster. In that case I doubt my friend will really use the maps that often so it's no problem. Anyone know about the crapware?
Picard, are you using the desire or is your mother? Do you think you can try installing a nav app on your desire and see if it works? I tried it on, don't remember which one, on my desire and it's never worked properly. Meaning I'm stuck with google maps.

Motonav, Sygic, Ndrive, Copilot have all worked.

The Desire works fine with Aura installed (the same one I have on my Galaxy S), except it locks WAAAYYY faster than my Galaxy does. Crapware wise on the Rogers Captivate I read on the Rogers blog that crapware is not "pre-installed" per se, but instead links are put in so you can "download them with ease".

anyone else find all GPS programs like tomtom, navigon, garmin to be kinda crappy for navigation or simply using it to search for locations? I find the UI to be a pain to use and scrolling through the maps just doesn't have the same feel as google maps. I remember having problems just trying to select a location and setting it as my destination because I was in "view map" mode instead of "navigate to" mode. I also found POIs to be always lacking no matter how updated they are.
last time I was in the states this frustrated me so much I ended up using wifi to use google maps to navigate to the location I needed, and made sure to load up the map surrounding that area so when I'm off wifi I can see my location. THAT worked like a charm lol.
