The SGS2 variants have been named for the US carriers, so it can't be too far off until release.

hold on a sec...what recall?

or do you mean if your phone died after flashing to froyo (pre-jl2) that they replaced it?

i'm have one from sept 2010 and have been running doc's original i9000m rom (jk3) since nov...about to try miui just for the hell of it

Culverin 05-26-2011 07:04 PM

Just out of curiousity, I've got a SGS Captivate right now (perfect condition) box accesories, 2 screen sheets and 2 tpu cases (1 clear argyle and 1 body glove case).

What do you think a fair asking price would be?

Kamui712 05-26-2011 08:46 PM

go read some review on atrix, moto blur made the phone shitty

Not sure. Best gauge would be to check craigslist.

!LittleDragon 05-27-2011 03:37 PM

I just picked up a Captivate BNIB yesterday for $300

m3thods 05-27-2011 07:14 PM

Great deal.. have fun with it! My current favorite ROM is Mosaic III- best GB ROM I've tried (Tried Darkys and Continuum)

Soundy 05-27-2011 08:50 PM

So 46 pages in, what's the general opinion of this phone? Assuming I don't want to hack it up (right away), just out-of-the-box? How's it compare to some of the others out there right now?

Looking specifically at the Telus Galaxy S "Fascinate"...

CP.AR 05-27-2011 10:28 PM

Just out of the box... right now I'd spend the extra cash and get a Nexus S.

but if you are really inclined to get a Galaxy S. It's not bad. just don't expect a lot of support from Samsung (pretty much all the fixes are done by 3rd party independent developers).

The screen is still IMO the best among all smartphones out on the market today (minus the Nexus S, which uses a next gen super AMOLED display).

!MiKrofT 05-27-2011 11:14 PM

They should actually be both super amoled. the main difference is os updates. Samsung is still supporting the phone. They just released gingerbread build in the uk.

!LittleDragon 05-28-2011 01:41 AM

The one thing that stopped me from getting the Nexus S is the lack of a microsd slot. You're stuck with the 16gb and I just bought a 32gb card for my Milestone before I killed it with a bad flash. My Captivate right now weights in at 48gb.

whoops my bad. got confused with the Galaxy S2

Hey guys. Thinking of picking up a used captivate. I'm still using a BB9700 at the moment and may alternate between the 2 phones. Would BIS data plan work for the android? I believe it does but better to double check with the pros!

Thanks!

I believe the Nexus s uses the same super amoled display. Difference is that it's contoured?

djm 05-28-2011 02:46 PM

Is there a difference between the Galaxy S and Galaxy S SCL?

SuperLCD vs. SuperAmoled and different battery.

The truth. There aren't many phones aside from the SGS2 that have the new SAMOLED Plus screen. Only the Samsung Droid Charge comes to mind.

!MiKrofT 05-28-2011 11:37 PM

The contoured glass is also not gorilla glass like the galaxy s.

djm 05-31-2011 02:17 PM

samsung galaxy s scl vs htc desire? is one phone majorly "better" over another?

!MiKrofT 05-31-2011 03:47 PM

Those are 2 very different phones... Samsung is better considering it has a more optimized processsor, bigger screen, better camera, super amoled. Aftermarket rom support is pretty equal.

CP.AR 07-13-2011 09:39 AM

Bump!

very interesting thing happened to me in Hong Kong
I was able to get 3.5G data in Hong kong from my NAM T-Mo Galaxy S!

imo, if your going to get used/private sale, go through the xda forums of that device and check whats a common defect with the phone.

Learned the hard way, $450 Galaxy Vibrant private sale, SD issue after the 1st month. Dead phone.
Didnt have receipt, so no one would take it back, not even for repair.

Simliar issue with my Captivate. Private sale with receipt, BNIB.
Issue with random shut down. Took it back to FS to exchange for a different one. And they just told me in order to exchange the person who BROUGHT the phone have to be there to change it.
So I just gave up and flash to a custom Rom and problem fixed!

I'm holding off the LG 2X atm.
Seems to have a problem with the phone randomly shutting down.
Not risking anything.

My vibrant died on me too a few months ago. Same situation as you: private sale with no receipt. Took many calls to samsung before some guy higher up was willing to email me a shipping label to have it repaired.

Iono if you've resolved this by now since it's been almos two months since your post but I'd try doing this before writing off the SGS. At least you can sell it after it gets repaired.

Finally traded my BB for one... Currently has 2.1 Eclair.. Gingerbread 2.3 is out for it already right?

mb_ 07-30-2011 12:49 AM

Tried updating it to Froyo through Kies and said "not supported for an updated" wtf.

Looks like I'll be reading through thousands of threads in the next week

2.1? Wow. You got like the first release of the captivate. Very old. Try checking for updates in the settings menu. Not sure if galaxy s phones can do over the air update.
