So this is considered as hardware unlock?

!MiKrofT 08-21-2010 10:13 PM

This is a true unlock. The phone will be fully unlocked after this. No additional hardware modification needed.

Full price with no plan or pay-as-you-go, but bell retail outlets are unlikely to sell it to you like so as their comission is based on plans, not phones.

Varying levels of discount are for voice-only plans.

Full discount would apply to a 3-year voice-and-data (they call it a "premium" plan) or voice plus data plan. To get the $150 price you need to sign a new contract with voice and data.

Bell has a policy that does not reps to sell phone with out having the phone attached to a plan (new or existing)
however, if you are lucky, you can find reps who are willing to bend the rules

discounts depend on the length of the contract. (1,2,3 year) any contract must have data. otherwise, no discount will be added.

the vibrant being a non blackberry must have a smartphone combo plan ($50+) or a voice plan (consumer or corporate) with data as a feature.

Here is the original thread for the Vibrant unlock on XDA Developers.

^ Does that go the same for all dealers? Or is that just the Bell store?

Culverin 08-22-2010 12:45 AM

And that's why I'm not with bell. hahahaha.

I'm definitely committing to this phone on Rogers.

Has anybody started shopping for accessories yet?
I'm looking for a case as it's done wonders for my Cowon D2 DAP.

Ideally I'd be able to find something like these:

Why would you pay $10 for it when you can do it for free?

Sweet case. Too bad they only make cases for mainly Apple phones.

You guys could also go across the border and just buy an AT&T Captivate if you're willing to pay full price. I was pretty tempted to buy a captivate when I was down at Fry's.

TOS'd 08-22-2010 02:52 PM

So torn between all these phones. Vibrant seems to be the better of the two, but its on Wind.

Source?
Can't seem to find any info on the rogers site at all.
The Captivate launch page still looks the same.
I wanna be in the first batch of Captivate upgrades.

TOS'd,
The Vibrant is on Bell too, not just wind.

!MiKrofT 08-22-2010 08:03 PM

I think he works for Rogers?

There are two vibrants, the Bell Vibrant (Rogers/Fido 3g) which looks exaclty the same as the original Galaxy S (i9000) and the T-mobile vibrant which is the Wind compatible one. Does anyoen know whether these 2 have the exact same dimensions? looking to buy a case soon

!MiKrofT 08-22-2010 09:38 PM

It should be the same as long as both Models are named Vibrant.

c3m 08-22-2010 09:59 PM

According to Engadget article
the T-mobile can be used on AT&T 3G network once it's unlocked

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/22/c...r-phone-vibra/
Quote:

Sure, the Samsung Vibrant's a T-Mobile device and the Samsung Captivate belongs to AT&T, but there's no longer any reason you can't swap them around -- all you need is a simple script and a USB cable to completely unlock your phone. Dagentooboy of XDA-Developers discovered that Galaxy S unlock codes aren't kept in a secure remote server, but merely stored in a .BAK file on the device itself, which you find with a hex editor and key right in when inserting a new SIM card of your choice. We tested it out on both Vibrant and Captivate and were up and running in less than five minutes each time, and wonder of wonders, the Vibrant gave us a 3G data connection (with 2Mbps down) using an AT&T SIM. Sadly, we can't say the inverse for the Captivate, which pulled down standard EDGE speeds on T-Mobile, but this is already far more than the hacking community could have hoped for. The best part? None of this requires you to actually root the phone, and if you're worried about warranty you can re-lock the handset with the very same code.

CP.AR 08-22-2010 10:17 PM

darthchilli please let us know ASAP when you have ANY information!!!!!!!

I want this phone by the time I go to the Excited States of America on the 28th!!!!!

Tim Budong 08-22-2010 11:05 PM

i can almost say that this phone wont launch this week..or wednesday
its the middle of september..its just a training launch event like the x10..in which i might not even go

Culverin 08-22-2010 11:13 PM

Yeah, from what everybody has mentioned, we are looking at a mid september launch.

I'm not sure where I heard it, somehow, it's been planted in my head to expect launch/stock on the week of the 13th.

If you want one just buy a bell vibrant and follow the steps in the xda unlock thread. Worked for me using it on rogers right now.

How is reception? And how slow is the data?

CP.AR 08-23-2010 08:32 AM

I actually don't like the look of the Vibrant - too "iClone" of a look for me.

Are the unlocks for these software independent? that is... if I upgrade to 2.2 down the road would I have to re-do the unlocking process?

you can change the launcher to w/e you want and even uninstall touchwiz. i doubt the code will have to be reentered as its put on the sim, if you change sims im sure you will have to reenter the code.

I'm sure it was mentioned earlier but I can't find it. What is the difference between Vibrant and Captive, in terms of network. I'm a phone noob but I thought Bell runs on HSPA whereas Rogers is GSM.

rogers is most definately hspa, i think gsm refers to the cell phone network itself hspa is the data side (correct me if im wrong)

only diff between vibrant and captivate is captivate lacks the front camera

jeff19 08-23-2010 10:52 AM

for those that have a vibrant right now, are u guys using any cases? if so, which ones and whered u get them? I've called various places and none of them have any cases for the galaxy s yet. Bell has cases, but their prices are stupid ($30 for snap on cases). I could order for much cheaper on ebay, but dont wanna wait for shipping.
