BBM Vs. Facetime

I know people have made different threads on which phone should i get but i have already decided that im going to go and pick up the 9800 once it hits canada, reason being is i've been wanting a blackberry for some time now and the only thing holding me back was the web browser being so shitty on the other devices or i shouldnt say that but not as great as other phones. Everyone also saying the phones really sluggish, im really hoping its not as bad because then im not sure what im going to do since my minds already set. I'd pick up the 9700 but honestly i dont see any point in picking up a old phone regardless of how great that phone is i dont want a year old phone especially when theres an iphone 4 i could easily pick up over that even if it does have bbm.

But the title is pretty straight forward im on the fence a little more because the fact that everyones saying the phones a little sluggish, and i've recently seen first hand how face time is like outside the apple store and its a pretty amazing feature, it was actually pretty insane. But question for people that have the iphone 4, i've heard you can unlock the phone to make facetime work over 3g? this true? and it doesnt cost any extra?
As for current bbm users do you ever get sick of it? or is it really that crazy of a feature to have.

Anyone have a better alternative for the 9800 BB wise? i know there making a newer 9700....9780 or something but im not about to wait until christmas.......
Thanks

ip4 jailbroken i've facetime over 3g it works great very good quality too.

tbh i would probably only facetime with my SO the most but she doesn't have a ip4 and i'm too cheap to get her one. Uses have been very limited so far, did play around with it with a friend thought showing his frd my dog which she never seen was a pretty cool exprience. Now i 'm starting to sound like the commercial

i read somewhere facetime over 3g is about 8mb a min? so i don't know acceptable rate?..
sleep now

You will never get sick of BBM. EVER

Expresso 08-10-2010 08:15 AM

Just depends on your circle of friends. If they don't run blackberries then just get the iPhone. But if they are using BBs then chances are you are missing out.

I can't speak for the Iphone side, but your question about the BBM and such I can help you with
Personally, I don't see any reason for you not to consider the 9700, hell even the 9000
I know you're thinking as you read this "naww son the 9700 is old, and the 9000 is ancient!"
yes I know they're old, but they're able to do exactly what you'll want it to do
the browser like you said isn't the best, but I find it very passable once you get used to it

and as for if I ever get sick of BBM, hell no
I can recall countless times BBM has saved me from making a phone call, eg. pulling up to pick up a friend, message "im outside" and they come out within a minute
you just gotta try it out for yourself
it's really just the little things that count for me, and it's so effortless and convenient

hope that helps with your decision

Yep. everyone i know has an iphone, ive got a berry. I use BBM with only 2 other people, and not that often.
That being said, BBM to me isnt that amazing. Yea its great knowing if the message is read, yeah its great that its sent instantly, but all smartphones can IM now. Using proprietary BBM has never really appealed to me.

As for comparing BBM to facetime, that's apples and oranges my friend.

If you only have two people on your list then it probably won't appeal to you too much. BBM has effectively replaced MSN for me. I have no complaints.

In my circle of friends a lot of ppl have bkackberrys or are picking them up out of all my close guy friends only 5 of us have iPhones everyone else had a bb.

As for what you said green - I feel like it's such a waste for me to upgrade to an older phone if I was to get a 9700 I'd have to probably buy it out right. Like you were sayin I'd think those phones are oldies haha that's why I'm thinking about the new blackberry, I just really want it to come out in Canada hopefully soon so I can get my hands on it and actually try it out for myself

Apple has a phone that may "change teh way we look phones" thats about it, its clearly not the best, its up there, but when you say best, it needs the balance of being functional

You're ignorant as fuck, it almost hurts

BBMme 08-10-2010 05:23 PM

BBM's the only reason why I'm still with blackberry. Canada/usa data + bbm = win!

ForbiddenX 08-10-2010 06:28 PM

I still haven't gotten my iphone4 nor have I been really paying that much attention to it just wanted to resell it but if you jailbreak your phone can you use it for skype cam to cam?

aznrsx1979 08-10-2010 06:46 PM

I can't wait to get rid of my iphone. There's so many times I've wanted to throw it against the wall. Now that the torch is coming out soon (hopefully) I'm gonna make the switch to the Blackberry. Most of my friends have Blackberry's anyway.

if u wanna pick up chicks. BBM man. its just easier. someone back me up!

G 08-10-2010 08:47 PM

I'm on the same boat as you OP, I get a hardware upgrade in December and a crazy discount on data if I add it and I keep asking people BB vs Iphone4.

Most chicks use BBM to gossip and stuff like that, and yes, agreeing with DavidNguyen, you can probably pick up more chicks using BBM when you add them and such etc etc, but you can also use more than bbm on a blackberry, stuff like MSN is pretty useful, and the MSN app on the blackberry, I find, is way better than other phones ebuddy,or replica MSN apps..

But, switching to the Iphone4, depending on what your preferences are, I myself really like the new design and everything about it. The facetime is definitely a cool feature to have, and you can probably pick up chicks too by flaunting the phone etc. (BTW, can you really use skype w/cam with the iphone4???). I also heard of some app called Ping (?) which is pretty much BBM, but only for iphone users.

For me, I am about felling about 60-40 for the Iphone4 over the Blackberry 9700.

(Sorry if this post sounds retarded, my head is messed from studying all day)

TOS'd 08-10-2010 08:51 PM

^ there is also Kik and Whatsapp, which is cross-platform.

The_AK 08-10-2010 08:51 PM

lol i actually was just joking about facetime with a friend,

he told me his car isn't starting and its making some weird noise, i told him "too bad the both of us don't have iphones 4s, that way i could actually see LIVE what is going on!"

hahah, i think facetime could have some good uses.

JLC 08-10-2010 09:00 PM

Will never get sick of BBM...its an amazing app...
As for comparing Facetime and BBM? thats like comparing apples to oranges...you can't compare the two...

Face time is cool...I'll give it that...but how often are you really going to use it? Yeah its fun to play with at first...but are you really going to facetime with your boys? Pretty hurting if you ask me...you'll never facetime with anyone else much except for maybe your girlfriend/boyfriend...you'll get bored of it pretty quick and probably wont touch it much after the first couple days...

Gh0stRider 08-10-2010 09:23 PM

facetime aint got shit on BBM

SkinnyPupp 08-10-2010 09:23 PM

Nobody is going to remember Face Time exists in 6 months.
