| TL Headlights
I've been contemplating (after reading countless threads on acurazine..) to clear my headlights.
This involves taking out the amber plastic that surrounds the sides on the headlights.
Examples:
Stock
Cleared
Would this be legal in BC?

(2) A lamp type turn signal system must
(a) have 2 lamps, mounted on the front of the vehicle, that are capable of displaying flashes of white or amber light which are visible to the front,
(b) have 2 lamps, mounted on the rear of the vehicle, that are capable of displaying flashes of red or amber light which are visible to the rear,
(c) be visible on each side of the vehicle at a distance of 100 m in normal sunlight at an angle of 45° from the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, and

(3) During the time specified in section 4.01, a semaphore turn signal device must be capable of illumination by light or reflection visible from a distance of 100 m.
(4) A public passenger vehicle or a commercial vehicle that weighs more than 4 500 kg may be equipped with supplementary turn signal lamps in addition to the turn signal system required by subsection (2).
(5) A turn signal lamp must be mounted on the vehicle at a height of not less than 38 cm and not more than 1.83 m.
(6) Subsection (5) does not apply to highway construction vehicles, maintenance vehicles, tow cars or vehicles being towed by a tow car.
(7) A vehicle which is being transported in a drive-away/tow-away operation, or is being towed by a tow car, must have turn signals that are synchronized with the turn signals of the towing vehicle when the tow vehicle turn signals are illuminated.
(8) Despite subsection (5), a tow car may be equipped with supplementary turn signal lamps mounted within the maximum allowable vehicle height (4.15 m) and as far forward as the rear of the cab.
(9) The centre of the front signal lamps must be at least 10 cm from the edge of the low beam headlamps
One other thing to keep in mind...and vehicle manufactured after 1971 must not have any original light or reflector removed/replaced unless it meets current standards. This is in the Provincial Inspection book. All lighting installed must meet approval of the Supt. Motor Vehicles and that means all TS 108 standards and the Canad Safety Act. IF your replacements meet all those qualifications, then you are legal. | You can mod your lights. And have Clear White bulbs. NOT BLUE If you wanted to be a ricer.
But I would have Clear Ambers (Clear bulbs that flash Amber) just in case a cop feels like he knows the MVA better than the Judge.
We have a Search Button and a Police Forum for this sorta thing. It also has a link to the MVA, but Zulutango or the other Officers have already posted the relevant excerpts from the MVA already. Just Search.

so is red light considered amber as well ? I was under the impression that amber means red and or orange lights.
I did a demon eye blinker on my car with a red LED, now reading SpuGens post I'm wondering if red is considered amber.
If not, then it'd would mean a turd sandwich for me, in SpuGens post it says white is OK to have as a blinker and I actually used to have a white blinker before. Thinking that was illegal I wanted to switch to amber for more visibility and no hassle from police.... although I've never been hassled for my white blinker before.

You can actually get a ticket for having headlights that are too dirty or cloudy, as it's deemed unsafe since you're restricting OEM light output.
I don't think it says anything about making them any brighter though.. so go nuts with LEDs. Except for Headlights. HIDs are illegal unless it comes with them OEM.
Basically:
Front:
Low/Highbeam - White is OK Blue(8000k+) is NOT.
Turning Signals/Side Markers - White/Orange is OK. Blue is NOT.
Foglights -White or Yellow.
NO RED AT ALL.
Rear:
Brake lights MUST BE RED.
Turning Signals - Red/Amber ONLY.
Side Markers - RED ONLY. <- I think. Most likely. Amber is probably fine...I didn't check.
Reverse Lights - WHITE ONLY. NO BLUE.
For LOWERED CARS
Minimum Height of Headlights AT THE CENTER must be 56CM from the Ground.
Center of Projector or Center of Bulb. Some lenses have those marking points on the lens itself where you can triangulate and measure.
For Headlights:
Black housings, not Lenses are an iffy subject. It all depends on Projector/Halogen Reflector setups.
You have fingers, you can search it yourself.

The law says you have to have amber reflectors. If you remove them, you're breaking the law.
Now.. when you get smacked with a VI, will it be worth it?

The TL has reflective Amber side markers stock. So it's fine. Quote:

Reflective devices
4.21 (1) A vehicle must be equipped with at least one red reflector at the rear of the vehicle, either separate or incorporated into a tail lamp, that is mounted at a height of not less than 38 cm and not more than 1.83 m.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a vehicle manufactured before January 1, 1958.
(3) Only amber reflectors may be mounted on the front or side of a vehicle.
(4) Only red reflectors may be mounted on the rear of a vehicle or on the side of the vehicle at or toward the rear of the vehicle.
(5) A vehicle with an overall width of 2.05 m or more, or a trailer or semitrailer having a gross weight in excess of 1 400 kg, must be equipped with at least
(a) 2 amber reflectors mounted on the side of the vehicle, trailer or semitrailer near the front,
(b) 2 amber reflectors mounted on the side of the vehicle, trailer or semitrailer near the rear, and
(c) 2 red reflectors mounted on the rear of the vehicle, trailer or semitrailer.
(6) A trailer or semitrailer must be equipped with at least one red reflector on the rear of the vehicle at each side.
(7) A pole trailer must be equipped with at least
(a) one amber reflector on each side of the vehicle at the front and the horizontal mid-point, and
(b) one red reflector on the rear of the vehicle or load at each side.
(8) A commercial trailer with a width of more than 2.05 m and a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 4 536 kg must be equipped with reflective markings on the rear and side of the vehicle to meet the approved standards established by the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada) and the applicable SAE standards
(a) on and after January 1, 2000 if the vehicle was manufactured on or after December 1, 1993, and
(b) on and after January 1, 2002 if the vehicle was manufactured before December 1, 1993.
(9) Despite subsections (1) to (7), reflective markings may replace red or amber reflectors on the side or rear of a vehicle. |
It's debatable whether or not his mod is legal or not since the side marker mayor may not be reflective, but for the most part, it's fine within the MVA, since those front side markers illuminate when any lights are turned on.
Most cops will void the Clear side reflector as long as something reflects white or amber in the front.
Or red in the Rear.

If the side-marker is reflective, he's not legal, but he's within the letter of the law.
If the side-market is not reflective, he's neither legal nor within the letter of the law.
The letter of the law states that all lights and reflectors must stay as they were equipped on the car from the factory--there's a quintrillion of these thread in the police forum. lurk & surch moar.

My clear corners are white but they still look blue. The only thing you need yellow on your car is your turn signals.. my car has no yellow reflectors and I havent been bugged about it at all.
