Keeping your cell phone number

I'm quite the newbie when it comes to cell phones & plans. I've had my number for YEARS and it would suck if I had to change it.

In what situations would your cell number have to change?

I'm with Rogers, and I bought my Krzr K1 in HK so I assume it's unlocked.

if you move out of the country or they decided to cancel your account (not paying your bills or illegal activities)

Ok let me add that I'm thinking of changing companies (i.e. getting a better plan from another carrier). Would my number have to change then?

No.

just get the new carrier to port over your number...

1. Go to new carrier of your choice

2. Tell sales rep you intend to keep your existing number.

3. Sign up with new carrier.

4. Let the sales agent do his/her thing.

5. Keep your number.

6. Say goodbye to your previous carrier.

7. Expect one last bill from them. :p

Last time I ported over my number, they gave me a temp number and when it was officially ported over, you get a text. Took about no longer than 12 hours IIRC, this was like a couple years ago though

Does porting numbers apply to prepaid accounts?

Affirmative, unless anything changed, I did that one year ago in fact and it worked perfectly; I was on Fido for both prepaid and my new contract.

yup they've all nailed it

again if you're not in the situation i listed before chances are you'll keep your number

Gumby 08-18-2010 08:15 AM

Ok thanks guys - now I'm reassured that I won't lose my number. :)

What if say I still had a year left on my Rogers contract and i wanted to switch over to Bell. I understand I will have to pay to cancel the remaining months of my existing contract, but can I take my number with me to the new carrier?

I believe you can do that, Bell will probably take care of it for you.
