Honda Canada Rumored to Drop Insight, Civic Hybrid

Quote:

Honda may drop both the Civic Hybrid and the Insight from its lineup in Canada. According to a recent report by Monvolant, the two hybrids will be eliminated from the product plan – likely in response to dismally poor sales. This would then leave the new CR-Z as the only hybrid in Honda Canada’s lineup.

When the Insight launched over a year ago, Honda Canada projected sales of 10,000 units. But poor press, a high-dollar asking price and competition from the third-generation Toyota Prius may all be contributing factors to the fact that just 748 Insights have been sold so far this year. Worse still are Civic Hybrid sales, with just 643 units moved in 2010.

With such low Honda hybrid sales you’d expect the Prius to be conquesting a lot of buyers, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with just 2,272 third-gen Prius models sold in Canada so far this year. While there are no hard facts surrounding why Canadians are turning away from hybrids, possible factors include the higher price of the cars in Canada, the lack of large urbanized cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal stand out as exceptions) and the colder climate often means hybrids don’t perform up to their lofty MPG targets.

Honda's IMA is vastly inferior to Toyota's HSD, and Ford's similar hybrid drive. Honda recently released a 'fix' which limits electric motor usage, which has negatively affected fuel economy. There are discussions that this was done to increase the life of the battery, due to reports of dying power packs. Honda's IMA apparently deep-cycles the battery, and that's bad for longevity. Toyota's HSD only uses 40% of it's battery capacity, keeping the state of charge in a range of 40-80%.

don't know why anyone would get a civic hybrid.... doesn't the civic already get like 7.6L/100km?....
seriously, how much more fuel efficient do you want? a car that produces gasoline as it drives perhaps?

...because at 4.6L~5.2L/100km, that means monthly fill-ups of about $45 for me. :)

kinda wish they make a sports model of the CR-Z,
looks totally sick to me.

I wonder how it compares to the Insight?

toyota86 08-24-2010 01:50 AM

i guess honda really wants tree huggers to buy a cr-z

screw hybrids. i want euro diesels. a renault clio 1.5 diesel 6spd can average 4.5l/100km easy. 1000km per fill up and still manage to hit 200km on the autobahn with a bit of a tail wind.

the toyota looks so much better than the insight.

Honda should drop that hideous crosstour too.

They should retro the EG. My EG is getting better mpg than my yaris.

just curious: do hybrid owners feel very smug looking around a busy gas station as they fill up their cars?

oldsnail 08-24-2010 09:02 AM

i had an 02 honda insight, 2 seater .. 5 spd.. i do get really good fuel economy...average around 4L/100km..even lesss if i go on long trips.. the new one is an odd ball.. it seems like the new CR-Z replaced the old inisght ..both being 2 seats, both offered in standard..

it is still very peppy for it being fairly light. and even if i had a heavy footed week.. i would still get around 5L/100kms due to its 1L engine..

i chose the old 2 seater insight because i dont want a smart car..
