I've read/watched countless reviews on this phone and it seems pretty good.
But none of the reviews covered gaming on it.
I'm just curious about the gaming, and if the screen is big enough?
My other option was iPhone or Galaxy S II X.
But I'm a bit reluctant to pay $50/mo.
I'm not sure if there's any way to haggle it down to let me use one of those phones
without paying the $50/mo. minmum. Is it possible?
I never dealt with retentions before, but I've been with Telus for 6 years.

I never dealt with retentions before, but I've been with Telus for 6 years. | Hi there,
As for the gaming, I don't play games in general. The only game I download is angry birds. However, the screen is small. High quality Bravia Sony type, but small. If I were playing games on the Ray, I'd be squinting.
I thought about the iphone. However, you absolutely need to get a data plan or buy the phone out-right. There's no negotiations. My friend who is a manager of 2 Telus Mobility stores said that iphones sell itself. Customers come in looking for it; salespeople don't need to solicit.
There are smartphones that you can get without a data plan. Just ask them which ones. The ericsson had dragged the sony's name through mud and that's why no one really buys the sony-ericsson phone. Especially people in Asia. For me it was the samsung vs the ray. What sold me was the quality of sony components and that it was "different" from your typical iphone, samsung, blackberry.
When I dealt with retentions, the girl said that the phone and how long you sign is up to me. More years = more discount. She just works out the monthly plan.
WARNING: As for the Ray, now I've had it randomly re-boot sometimes. I can't figure it out. Main: Random Resets of Xperia Ray seems like some others have had the same issue.
I've asked some salesmen if there are any complaints about this same problem, but they said no. I LOVE the phone, but the rebooting thing, I've got to figure out why. I uninstalled the mcAfee antivirus app and it seems to have reduced the re-booting by 85%. Just once in a blue moon, usually when wifi signal is weak, it tends to reboot automatically. I then take out the battery and sim card and it's fine. downfall of a having a wifi smartphone on without data plan? Anyhow, I still have warranty and my buddy will take it back for repairs if the rebooting continues.

Blackberry Curve 9360 is another phone that does not need a data plan.
Also Telus just made the iPhone 3GS 8GB to be available on ANY plan.

Could you break down how much the plan is seperately?
It looks like $25 for the plan, $20 for 1GB and 10 and a $10 discount if you received the regular text/voicemail package ($15) and paid for CID($8).

I'm a new customer and they offered me this
$55
300 Mins Local Outgoing
250 Mins Local Incoming
6gb Data + Tethering
6pm Early Eve and Week Ends
250 Canada Wide TXT
250 International TXT
Visual VM & CD
$350 New Customer Credit
$35 Admin Fee Waive
also if I port all my numbers they will give me $400 each ported line.
I think the $55 plan + credits that they offered me is a really good deal considering the fact that I'm a new customer.
What do you think guys and hows TELUS Coverage/Signal? I need your suggestions.... |

I am pretty sure it's 250 Canadian text, no 250 international text.
Also, it would be $400 each ported line. So you would only get $400 each line but not the $350 on top of that.

hi everyone. Update on Xperia ray. I forgot to post this a while back, but I sent it in for warranty and they replaced my handset. It has a new updated software. Everything is all good now, except I can't send picture texts. But I don't have a data plan.

Although it doesn't require data for picture messages, your data has to be enabled. Also, check if there's a data block on your account. If it's there, there's no way you can send or receive picture message.

If you hit the wrong button (example safari), or have apps that updates itself (weather) then you would be charged. I would recommend you to use apps like whatsapp or something. That way you would receive and send pictures, but only when you are on wifi.

Honestly, Telus is a huge rip-off. It's like they want to scam their customer's more money to compensate for the money that they've spent on their new GSM network, that Rogers, and Fido had like since the beginning. Rogers, and Fido have similar or better reception as Telus and Bell but they offer "unlimited" plans, and better deals overall to their customers. Just look at my plan at Fido; I got this plan while being with them for 4 months.
-200 Daytime minutes ( billed by seconds, meaning that if you called for 2 seconds, they only 2 seconds will be billed)
-Unlimited weekends and after 5 on weekends.
-Unlimited incoming calls
-Caller ID, Voice mail
-100 text
-6GB data.
All for $42 before tax, and with a 3 years contract for an iPhone 4s. Amazing deal and offer. I think i got like $15 credit from them.

Thanks davy. Yes I have data blocked intentionally on my current plan to avoid accidentally pressing a wrong button. It has happened before, but thanks for clarifying it for us.
And imo, yes Telus is more expensive. But Chooman and I both have Telus and always agree that Telus Customer Service is better than others. I've been a smart ass when negotiating with Telus and the reps just "take it". But they always seem to pull out something to change my mind before I cancel my contract. I always give them kudos at the end of our call.
And for that they get my business, even if its a tad more expensive. I've had other friends on other networks like Rogers and Fido and if you get the wrong rep and they dick around with you too. My friends then just move over to someone else that value their business. Like to Mobilicity. This has been my experience.
oh and also the RS members working for Telus (internet, phone, tech) have always helped us out on here too with our problems. Kudos to them for that.

I know for at least Fido that for all new smartphone retention plans, it needs to be a minimum of $50. That was last year, unless they've changed their policy and that I didn't know about.

Discounts for caller i.d. voicemail and such...
that is a pretty sweet plan...will keep in mind when negotiating with Telus

^ Nope, they don't give credits anymore. Unless, it's a grandfathered smartphone retention plan from years ago, there's no way you can renew with Rogers/Fido for less than $50/month on an individual plan.

| Bumpin this thread back up
Lets hear what my fellow RS'ers are getting from Telus...
Its time to negotiate once again as my contract is over next month
Looking to get into the Smartphone game, hopefully with the Samsung Galaxy S3
This is what I currently have Quote:
250 minutes, unlimited evenings/weekends from 6pm, unlimited text, caller id, call forwarding, conference calling, voice mail3, for 28$ including tax
| Now I'm happy with the features and minutes and really only need data, but don't know how much(won't be playing youtube videos, or downloading movies)
with that said I also don't want to pay over 50$ a month(Incl. tax)...

I'm on the Telus Promo Voice and Data Flex 55+ plan, with free CID
This plan includes:
200 Daytime minutes, 6pm weekend & evening unlimited
Unlimited Text Messaging Country-wide
Fav 10 Unlimited
Data Flex (Tiered, starting at 1GB)
Call Waiting+Voice Mail 3
Caller ID
55.00 + tax
This is not a retention plan. It's my first contract with Telus, and yes, I did try to call in to ask for the Student Sask55 and was declined twice.

That sask55 is not limited to student only........i think.........but it is one hell of a deal if u get CID for free too.
Now, for ruthless, Telus DOES have flex data starting from $10 for 100mb
Potentially would be $35 plus tax, and you would be able to get a smartphone.......don't quote me on this though, because it does seem too good to be true. if i recall, they have a minimum $50 requirement for smartphones, don't know if they can waive this policy for retention purposes.

The $50 minimum requirement for smartphones only applies to more of the "higher end" ones. A lot of the entry level androids are available without having to take on a $50 minimum monthly plan.
A quick browse of the website will tell you which ones they will offer without having to take on a $50mmp. Off the top of my head, Sony Xperia Ray, HTC One V, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Blackberry Curve 9360. It's when you start getting into the bold/torch ranges, the galaxy sII, galaxy note, galaxy nexus, any LTE phones, lumia 800, iphone, that they begin to charge the min. monthly.

Yeah, the Student Sask55 is not limited to students only, and people outside of the province CAN get it.
However, they're telling me unless I'm a long time customer or they fucked up real bad, they aren't going to give it to me no matter what.
sad times.
I added the CID to my plan for an additional $5 (regular cost is $8), and then called in 6 months in, saying that I'm having financial troubles and asked if they can help me out lol. So..they gave me the CID for free (-$8 credit)

Yeah see thats the thing, the phones that don't have that $50 a month minimum plan are not appealing to me
I'm hoping they can wave this stipulation or have the plan be $50 but impose some discounts so it brings down the monthly bill
Also I have been a telus customer for around 8 years so I should be able to get the Sask55 plan w/ caller I.D. but then it goes over $50 a month, which I don't want to pay....
there is also some loyalty 1gb for $20 thing that I could add on to my current plan, but then I'm not sure if they will waive the $50/month stipulation for the new phone I want
Something like this: Quote:
This is the plan I just got for $45 a month
They said I got the Sask 25 plus $20 1GB Loyalty Data add-on
300 Daytime minutes
Eve + Weekends after 5pm
1GB Data
Unlim text and messenging
Caller ID free for life of contract, $5 after
Voicemail 3
Call Forwarding + 3-Way Calling + Call Waiting
