Q: Stopping "Fitness World" contract

So i signed up for two years at fitness world in like feb. At about may, i lost my job, and i haven't paid since. I currently owe 180bucks. But i am 18 and lied about my age to get the membership. And i closed my bank account because of me being broke, i kept getting charged 42bucks bank fees for having no money. What can i do to cancel my membership without being in huge debt. To be honest, i dont wanna stop going to the gym , I just can't afford it atm. I asked if they can freeze my account and continue my contract when i have a job, They said no

LoL...thats why you don't lie when signing a contract and make sure you read the contract when you sign. Get your dad to pay for it.

why is the bank charging you bank fees if you closed your bank account?

wuuhoo 08-26-2010 12:59 PM

Right now, I get your dad to pay it off first. 180$ isnt a lot debt. Better tell him now or that 180$ becomes a lot bigger.

If you are going to cancel, just grab a doctors note.

Cause he probably just emptied the account hoping that would stop the payments.

OP, my membership is $19/mn after 2 years, if you cannot afford $19/mn you're in serious trouble.

wuuhoo 08-26-2010 02:02 PM

OP still has 1.5 years to go on his contract, before he recives the discounted price

U only owe $180 isn't the membership for new members start around 40? So you only haven't paid in like 3-4 months? That's not too bad I'm trying to call and see if they can freeze mine also bc I don't have a job right now either.

But if u were able to lie about your age why didn't you just lie and tell them your moving away and can't work-out there anymore? If it was getting really bad then they woul have cancelled tour account and you don't pay a fee, that's what someone did I know when they moved

I have no dad, and my mom is a single mother, i don't want her paying for this. I decided to sell my car to my brother and pay off all the debts i have from not working for the past 4 months.

that works.

Still, do you see a problem there? you have a car, you pay for gas/insurance. But you can't pay fitness world.

Your priorities need to change, or you might end up back in this similiar situation with a bigger debt when you are a bit older.

Bus, it isn't the end of the world. (though it might be for a 18 year old guy.)

Good job, i give you props for making a smarter decision.

I would though, go back to fitness world, tell him them you lost your job. And can't afford to make these payments. If the person says no, go higher up. Management, if not even higher, Executive management. I want my contract cancelled. Make a big fuss, the higher ups always don't want small problems like yours to explode into bigger news.

Bitch and complain, you're 18. I was awesome at that, when i was at that age.

If you really wanted to cancel your contract there are essentially 3 ways to get out of it.

1. Say your moving to the states, and all you have to do is get a friends address in the states and give them that

2. Get a doctors note saying that you're having back issues and you can't be doing any exercise

3. Make an ad on craigslist and transfer the remaining months to someone else

if you're 18 when you signed, you don't have a legally binding contract, I BELIEVE (although i can't be 100% sure)

check into that

if you must get away from it, and have no options - go there, tell them that you can't pay and that you don't have a legally binding contract (if what i said above is true) - be nice about it, they may just be sick of you and tell you to scram

or you could close your bank

your credit is f'd, though.... but that's not a huge problem for you right now, anyways

go get a shite job, somewhere, anywhere... man up...

don't lie - that's always the WORST advice you can give, as the truth always has a way of getting out (esp. when you're a dumb kid and can't think on your feet, which is likely the case here) and makes you look a) like an idiot and b) dishonest, the worst thing you can be especially when you're looking for leniency from FW

i had a similar situation with fitness world a few months ago. i had a contract at victoria fitness world then moved to vancouver due to finding a new job. i didn't like the busyness and the longer commute to the gym (20mins+) so i asked to cancel, to which they said too bad.

luckily for me, my mailing address and the city of where i grew up is in northern bc. i lied and told them that i moved back with my parents, showed proof of my hometown address, and got out of it that way.

after my experience with fitness world, i will never sign a gym contract or advise friends or family to sign with them. i signed on to fitness world in victoria due to it being nextdoor to my old place. now that i moved to vancouver due to a new job, they expected me to keep going there even though i would have to spend 20mins+ commuting. they're customer service is very unreasonable. would not deal with again.

edit: saved myself over $300 instead of just paying them out.

must be 19+ to legally enter a contract in bc. you can show negligence on their behalf as they did not take the time or effort to verify your age in an attempt to just get you signed on.
