| Surgery
Hey Guys,
So I'm going in for surgery on Tuesday and I'm feeling really nervous about it and can't sleep. I was just wondering if any of you have had surgery recently at UBC Hospital and how it went. I have a lot of anxiety problems, and my main concern is to not have any tubes put down my throat. My surgery is elective so I'm guessing it's not too serious, but any stories are appreciated! (Hopefully good ones)

Well...what kinda surgery is it? The kind that they would stick a tube down your throat?

I'm petrified of needles so the hardest part for me was the beginning when they inject all these needles in you to numb/put you to sleep. Once you fall asleep, before you know it, you wake up and it's all done. My surgery was quite minor though. I also remember waking up with my throat super dry and sore because of the tube they put in you. Nothing a little water will do! Good luck!

I've had 3 surgeries (2 at childrens 1 at richmond but none at UBC unfortunatly) and I'm only 16, I guess you're probably older than me. I would say, being nervous is normal I was nervous every time before I got in to the surgery room. All the doctors and nurses are trained and know what they're doing so you don't really have to worry about it. I'm not sure if they'll put tubes down your throat...but I never got that. You don't have to worry about the time during the surgery process too, they put you to sleep and the next thing you know, you're done and in bed. I'm not sure about the pain, but I got surgery on my knee and I felt no pain at all, didn't even have to take pain killers, but I guess different surgeries will feel different. It's quite normal to be nervous right before something like this, so just try your best to relax(easier said then done) and play some XBOX360/PS3 or SC2, that'll at least take your mind off of it, for a little while at least!

There's nothing to worry about. You'll be KO'd before the surgery starts anyways.
You'll be more nervous and stressed out the more you think about it.

The hardest part is the few hours before your surgery.
The most painful, is them sticking in the IV.
But once you count to 10, you'll realize that it wasn't so bad after all.
The most annoying.. is not being allowed to smoke before or after your surgery until you're fully healed.
Don't psyche yourself out too much. It's honestly as easy as closing your eyes.

what exactly is being removed in your abdomen? i have a barrett's esophagus right now with a hiatus hernia and im still waiting for another endoscopy in november so ive been suffering everyday with certain symptoms that would probably make a weak person give up and call it quits with life.
right now im more excited about getting a surgery done to end this suffering of mine.

or you could wake up in the middle of the surgery; it happens more often than you would imagine (but not too worry you still won't feel anything and likely be knocked out again before you even notice)
who's your doctor? maybe i can find out if he/she has any horror stories for ye

I am often in the operating room so I can give you a good idea on what to expect.
If anything, it will be the IV they put in that will be the worse part. Just take a couple of deep breaths as they put it in, dont hold your breath!
When they inject the general anesthetic, that part might sting a little too.
When you are out, they will put a tube down your throat that will be hooked up to a machine that will breathe for you, as you wont be able to do it yourself. The anesthesiologist will be looking out for your vitals.
When the surgery is done, they pull the tube out and wake you up.
Just remember that these people do this professionally and had to go through years and years of schooling and they know what they are doing.

You worried the nurses are going to take a peek at your willie? Lol...it's all good. Best part is when they tell you to count back from 10 and you pass out at 8. Aenestetics are great.

I've had about 11 surgeries in my life and honestly their not a big deal. And the reason I say this is because of the nurses and doctors. I have had such fantastic experiences with feeling safe and comfortable in the waiting rooms, in the pre-op and even just before your being put to sleep. When they start the anesthesia they will talk to you about cars, or video games or anything and you'll answer the question and before you know it you'll be under and then you'll be awaking with your parents and nurses around you.

I've had 3 surgeries on my left eye in the last 6 weeks for a detached retina and macular holes and if you are under general anesthesia its a breeze, you'll be over before you even know it. The worst part for me was the discomfort and recovery after.
Well actually, the worst part was for 2 of the surgeries, I was only put under local anesthesia, so I was awake and fully aware of what was going on when they where cutting into my eye and operating on it, that was not fun, especially for 70 minutes.

I had eye surgery a while back and the key for me was the doctor telling me he was 100% confident. I was given the anesthesia and I went to bed instantly, there really is no way you don't fall asleep. When you wake up, you'll be like, "wow that was it?"
It isn't fun when you wake up and you have the doctor adjusting the stitches in your eyes tho. It acutally does hurt.
