Donate your old computer parts here!

http://freegeekvancouver.org

I was going to dump a load of old computer parts and didn't want it going into the landfill. Google'd and found this place near E Hastings/Victoria in the alley. Inside was a factory like place full of volunteers and geeks testing and putting together old parts into computers for needy Vancouver families!

"Free Geek is a non profit organization that builds old computers from old donated parts. These computers are rented out to people who work for 24 hours at the facility. The old computers run Linux and are mainly for word processing and simple functions."

NOTE: they take ANY and ALL hardware -- even super old stuff, and they ensure that it is properly disposed of instead of being sent to 3rd world, or Delta's Burns Bog.

Yup I was thinking of volunteering too!

You can also take your stuff to a Return-It depot for recycling. It's the only way you can be 100% sure it won't be sent overseas to pollute third word countries.

I've been going to Free Geeks for a few years now. Good bunch of people. Hippies of the computer world.

I was thinking of volunteering there. They do a lot of good by making sure shit stays out of our landfills and whatever is reusable actually goes to good use.

They also make sure the stuff gets recycled. A lot of places say they do, but..............

Your local London Drugs will also recycle your computer parts for free AND you can donate them to Free Geek there as well! We will arrange transport of the products through our warehouse to Free Geek.

s939? i'm still using my s462

while i'm all for the recycling aspect of things, there have been many, many rumours about employees at recycle-it scavenging the computers for parts they can sell before actually processing the donations. i hope it's not true!

If you're dumping it, you obviously weren't expecting to get a dime for the parts, who cares if they try to sell your stuff? Freegeek does in their thrift store btw. I get a lot of my parts there.

selling as a store is different than selling for personal profit, that was my point.

I'm glad we have places like this in BC. I just watched a documentry made by some ubc students that showed alot of the e waste from north america going to foreign countries to be destroyed. Was an interesting watch.

Here's a link to the video http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/st...deo_index.html
