QS World University Rankings 2010

http://www.topuniversities.com/unive...s/2010/results

released few days ago.

Take what you will from these results. They don't mean a whole lot to me, but i know parents and alumni use these stats to brag.

cambridge is the first non-US school to top the list (harvard was #1 for 6 years straight) and many technical schools have moved up.

As expected, only 2 canadian schools made top 30 (Mcgill @ 19, UoT @ 29). All canadian schools ranking on the top 200 have dropped this year.

our local institutions, UBC is @ 44, SFU @ 214, UVic @ 241.

University rankings don't mean much outside of the western world, particularly in countries like South Korea (SKY) and Japan (Univ. of Tokyo), as they hold their own top universities in higher regard than Ivy league schools of the west.

Being an SFU alumni, I paid close attention to these type of polls that are released. A lot of them do not even rank SFU because the number of schools it has compared to the bigger universities ( UT, UBC.. etc ).

But hey, we're at Div 2 school now.

exactly, ubc is a pretty cool school - sauder kids and their love of themsevles is comical

i hate sauder grads (i'm an econ grad too, and will ALWAYS tell ppl that i'm a BA before saying that i went to sauder (ok, not to mention i have a designation, which trumps them all))

but seriously, BA > BComm as far as people being non douchebags/easier to get along with/better to work with (and again, most of my friends who did BSc in computer science, BA in econ with me, etc. make a lot more than sauder kids who don't go to the next level (i.e. CA, CFA...) - sometimes they surprise me with how much they make

Like stylin said, different universities may excel at one or two things, but fall short in others. I applied to the University of York in England after sifting through different schools because they have one of, if not the best programs in the world for the field I had chosen to get into. However, if you look at the QS rankings, they're only 88th, after dropping down from something like 70th last year.

i'm surprised HK universities are ranked so high..... i didn't think they were that good

if u rank it by:

Arts and Humanities, U of T jumps to #11, UBC to #31

Life Sciences and Medicine: U of T #16, UBC #20

Natural Sciences: U of T #14, UBC #18

Engineering: U of T #14, UBC #30

PREACH! When you photocopy business cases where it explicitly says "it is illegal to photocopy" on the back of every page, you know you're not on par with Harvard.

Your quote on the MBA program is on point. Those guys are just in the way, they take the best lockers (where most of em are empty), and they hog the nice lounge. Best thing to come out of the program there? Pingping courtesy of the fucking fobs.

I dunno why someone failed u.

I don't hate Sauder as much as you (I went there before going to SFU for their better business information systems program) but I do agree about the Sauder kids. Most of these losers think they're in Harvard or something.

yep i'm aware of that..just wanted to point it out as you said the institutions in BC aren't that great

you can sort the rankings by discipline/faculty

wow so much hate for the sauder mba program in here. I do realize there seems to be more international students but I dont have first-hand experience on how that's affecting the school and its networks.

I'm a UofT (UT to vancouver ppl) grad. I did commerce (accounting).

It's not surprising Sauder kids are full of themselves. Most are not aware of anything else other than own self-driven goals and their little UBC community. I recall trying to start up a conversation about other designations other than CA and it was like out of this world for them. Personally I think commerce people are the least easy going and hardest to approach compared to those in arts/sci etc. That's not to say that they don't know how to party tho~

I will have to disagree to a degree and I'll try to explain. I think it's mostly because Bcomm (I refuse to call it Sauder cuz we never wanted that name) is such a small community coupled with the fact that most are asians. During my time there you needed a very high mark to get in, and that resulted in a student pop of mostly asians with one goal: get a finance/accounting double major. The bcomm situation is unique even for UBC itself, we hardly ever have lectures outside our own building, we got standard time tables where we see each other time after time, the CA program and the big4s advertise the hell out of anything bcomm (and subsequently brainwashed the ones who didn't know what to take), and you got a situation where it became a bigger ver of a highschool group. It's a shame, because its hard for me to name 10 white people from class..........or anyone that's not Asian.

......they actually changed their admission scheme, they now require a more well rounded resume in order to qualify for the program. And from what I know the student body has become more diverse, and dare I say, normal (or maybe abnormal for 604 standards lol).

no issues, but being that i went through the CA program with the majority of ppl who came from Sauder, i just wanted to kill most of them - they're so cliquey, fake, and in love with themselves

you know, there's more to talk about in life than 'my future asperations' and 'how i'm going to make my millions' - Sauder kids are VERY one dimensional

in business, i am finding, that people like to do business with people who are interesting & who can do the work properly, sauder does not produce those people, only technically average people who can study books really hard

It's sad to say that it's the same in Toronto. Saw the same people day in day out for 3-4 years. Accounting and Finance majors think they are better than the rest and than each other. The only diff is that at least in BC they advertise other designations. Toronto is all CA but mainly because the city has closer roots to it than in the west. Yay for a changed admission scheme but with the way the student body shapes themselves... I don't think the end result will be anything differerent than it is now. You gotta be superficial to a certain degree to fit in anyways. =\ I helped out at this year's UBC tax clinic and everyone was either worried about their future or pretty confident of themselves. On the flipside, I attended a SFU event and met this nitwit who thought nothing in the world was better than getting your CA and to do anything otherwise was blasphemy to one's career. She also thought marrying her long-distance bf who had a masters in physiotherapy (or something) would guarantee her a comfy life.... geez.

I think the top students in my year were a Brown dude and a caucasian girl, then came the Asians ;O

This is at least for the business majors. The quality of academic life you spent in a university and network you build is way more important than how high your university ranks.
