Input Shaft Bearing

Anyone know how much i can expect to pay to have a input shaft bearing replaced?
1998 civic si, manual.
Assuming thats the issue im having that is.
At idle in neutral, clutch pressed all is fine.
clutch not pressed theres an almost rubbing/wearing sound.. hard to explain.

its a tranny re an re so figure on about 4-6 hours for that plus opening the tranny and needed parts. Labor rates vary throughout the city slightly but it should be in the ballpark of $600-$800 depending on all need parts. When its pulled apart obviously replace the clutch as well.

I think I have the same problem, when I accelerate in first and 2nd gear I hear this "ticking" noise, similar to a baseball card in bike spokes.

Replace tranny fluid first?
Input shaft bearing need to be replaced?

edit*
can it be low tranny fluid?

fliptuner 09-13-2010 03:12 PM

Sounds more like a release bearing issue to me but the labour rate would be the same regardless.

The_AK 09-13-2010 03:21 PM

Also, what could be the cause of the problem?

Trying to determine if this is a release bearing vs input shaft bearing problem is almost impossible without having the trans off.

Either way it will cost big bucks,

if it's only release bearing then you need a clutch job, so 5-800$

if it's input shaft bearing, you might as well do a clutch while everything it apart and then tack on between 3-600 depending on if its cheaper to replace trans (since d series trans are a dime a dozen) or do a partial rebuild to correct bearing failure.

Expect 600-1200$ I would say.

i thought the release bearing will cause this noise with the clutch depressed and no when its released.. either way though.

Might have to look into doing the work myself, the bearings only cost like $40ish.
and like stated to the clutch as well.

if you can drop the box yourself. it saves alot of cash. But i just had mine done in my Fit. common problem with hondas these days. A bit of advice, if you are going to drop the box and do the input shaft, get the other bearings for the box (i think there are like 5) and do most of the other easy ones whilst the box is out. It will only cost another $250 or so. well thats how much it cost me anyway.

I have the same problem for my AE86. Always had it ever since I bought the car over 6 years ago. My fix, buy a loud exhaust muwahhaha.

From what I know, it's not a huge deal, just sort of worn out to make that noise. I've bagged on my car a lot, and that particular part hasn't given me much headache at all aside from the annoying noise. Your mileage may vary of course.

jepho 09-16-2010 06:27 PM

I just went back to stock exhaust (got a ticket for exessive noise) so i notice it a lot more lately. I think im just going to attempt to do it myself and do all the other bearings as well.
Maybe ill take picts and do a step by step on how i did it....

Thanks for the replies.

Any special tools ill need to pick up for this?

Theres actually a whole DIY here:

Its very common on civic trans, The parts needed are like 25 bucks ive done mine three times. As for the other bearing no need to replace just check while its apart and stake down the needle bearing as its prone to walk out causing 2nd gear to pop out while driving.

As well you should order the isb seal and thrust washer and maybe new axel seals. throw out bearing and clutch kit if needed.

Also if you pull it some shops will charge around 250 to do, depending on the damage if any inside the case once opened.

^
how would you rate the difficulty of it? how long did it take you the first time?
