Im thinking on buying an Audi A4, anyone heard anything bad about these cars?

I've owned one of these cars, there are some pros and cons with the one that I owned.

With the price of these dropping, you can get into a nice european car for under 9K. Just make sure the car has all documented oil changes.

major transmission problem

i have a 2005 a4 1.8t.

avoid getting a cvt transmission - i have one and had to get the computer inside the transmission replaced - thank god for extended warranty. its a common problem with the cvt tranny.

sludge is an issue with this engine, so make sure that there is service records of the vehicle, and that they used synthetic.

alot of people have had sunroof issues.

its a hell of a car to drive - and looks great. so much after-market support, and many forums with very knowledgeable people to answer your questions.

my friend has a 2002 a4 with about 200,000 km on it

a few issues here and there but were all replaced, only now there is a small leak on the block, needs new gaskets

get as much records of servicing as possible, get a full inspection before purchase and get a quote for estimated repairs so you know what to expect when you purchase, get a quote for UPCOMING repairs that could ware out in the next few thousand km as well so you can start saving for those

drive it responsibly, and keep the servicing up to date and on time, check the fluid levels regularly and keep track of any odd sounds while driving

i have owned 2 cars with 1,8T's.

coil packs - are part of a recall. but are expensive.
one of them i had major electrical problems.

the other one i had, water leaking into the cabin area from the sunroof, burning oil which i think it is due to sludge.

it is very rare for my engine light to be off.

Coilpacks are free via the recall campaign thru Audi. Check your sunroof drains if you are getting water in there. As well, if you are getting random sunroof openings, it's a simple electrical contact in the sunroof knob/module. There is a DIY on Audizine for that. Burning oil is not sludge, it's a leaking valve cover gasket. Sludge in these cars happen when you don't use the proper oil, drive very short trips and/or don't follow proper change intervals. It's rare for sludge to happen on the AMB motor if you follow the procedures and drive normal mileage.

Parts aren't terribly expensive for the 1.8T, labour at the dealer is rape, but thankfully we have many good Audi/VW mechanics in town.

I would suggest you get a 2004-2005 model for the 1.8T. You get the 6-speed manual for highway cruising...it's the one thing I hate on my wife's 2003 A4. As well, make sure the timing belt and water pump has been done. The stock pump is junk and when you replace it, I suggest getting an aftermarket metal one.

I have almost had it with my sisters 2004 A4 1.8tq. Every week there is a new problem. From a leaking coolant flange, to coil packs, or to the hood release latch breaking.

I am not looking forward to dealing with it's problems on tuesday....

I just bought a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with 85k on it, for a really good deal and there's abosultely no problems with it. I've had it for a few months now and never felt a single thing out of place, they're quite affordable cars that work everywhere.. quattro ;P

it really depends what you get.. a lot of what was stated above is a factory recall... and you can get it fixed for free at audi. it is a nice car, cheap on gas and has potential if you want to put money into it. all around good car but get the quattro for sure!!
