Why dont they just put a better traction and stability control system in?

toyota86 09-19-2010 12:15 PM

BMW already made all the cars I ever want to buy from them. Not a big deal for me. Its just sad to see one of the last mostly rwd brands succumb to the stupid mass market.

shenmecar 09-19-2010 12:20 PM

M3 with XDrive

TRD Rs200 09-19-2010 12:47 PM

This has gotta be the stupidest idea ever, not bringing rwd bmw's into Canada is like saying "Fuck u Canada ur roads aren't good enf for our rwd" which is bs, I don't even want to start imagining fwd bmw's if this shit is true, someone is going to get fired really quickly

People rely far too much on their car's drive system to save them in an emergency situation, when in reality your fancy awd system won't do shit to slow you down when you're in a 4 wheel skid because you took a corner way too fast. Inexperience and ignorance are the two major factors that cause accidents in adverse weather conditions. Not to mention all of the people that just slap on all season tires onto their 4x4 because they think that's all they need.

In vancouver I can totally understand people not wanting to fork out for winters, but for christ sake, stay the fuck home if it snows, for all our sakes.

I wish there was a fail button for bmw, I'd be spamming it right now if I could. One of the reasons I would buy a bmw is because it's rwd... Now they're thinking of taking that away? I'd no longer have any desire to own a new one then.

this guys right on about everything

it's not that they're removing the cars with RWD, they're not having it as an option so everything will have the x drive.

but the point about the M's and Z4 makes sense, what're they going to do about thos models? i hope they just leave it in.

also, i think i would give up my rwd for AWD, if my car had 50 more HP :D

thats the whole fking point, if everything is x drive, what r the car enthusiasts gonna buy? i sure as hell aint gonna buy a 335i xdrive, or a 135i xdrive

traction and stability control aint gonna do shit if ur all season tires cant grip the road surface to stop u.

Z3guy 09-19-2010 05:49 PM

if there is demand for rwd bimmers...there will be a supply......

gilly 09-19-2010 06:30 PM

^ cool commercial

jungle168 09-19-2010 08:21 PM

I'm quickly losing faith in BMW. First no more high-revving NA motors, now this "X-Drive" nonsense. What's next, DCT transmissions only? Automakers need to seriously give their heads a shake if they want us to buy new vehicles. This is pitiful.

Todd Martinez 09-19-2010 08:39 PM

if they make all x drive i dont see the issue , however fwd would be a mistake

MWR34 09-19-2010 09:46 PM

We are complaining since Vancouver area gets 1-5 days of snow a year.

compare with other provinces that have 3-6 months a year of compact snow.

This isnt america, and our Sales volume for all of Canada is probably half a year from just California alone. So we are Small Fish in the scale of things.

death_blossom 09-20-2010 06:46 AM

What a friggin stupid idea. I sure hope all this coming from the CEO was all said in passing. I can't see how BMW headquarters back in Germany would agree with such a stupid strategy. He said //M cars will have x-drive in the future? Yeah right buddy, keep dreaming. I personally think Frank Jung's wife crashed one too many RWD bimmers. ;)

I understand that the rest of the country gets big snow every year, but the inhabitants of those cities are always prepared for snowy winters. On a rwd BMW, DTC combined with some snow tires should almost never get you stuck. It's just the goofs in Vancouver that think their SUV or AWD vehicles will monster through snow w/ balding all-seasons.

If you guys dont like my posts why do you read them? Cars arent my life, but BMW is one of my favourite automakers and knowing that there making a awful decision like that is terrible. X drive wont offer that raw handling the RWD gives. BMW should offer more selection for X-drive but not replace all RWD for x-drives. If you dont like my posts dont read them, when you see my username and picture just scroll down. Dont shit on my posts and dont post ridicoulous shit like "awwwwwwwww no bmw no RWD shit man I can't live life anymore wawawahwahwahwa mommyyyy" and aznboi that picture was one of the first pictures i took and it was with a old school digital camera. Im not a expert and i dont have a SLR wtf do you expect?

It don't think it would be a problem if they included a way for the driver to adjust the power bias...say 20/80, 40/60, etc...AND up the power output by 20% or more.

But I doubt that is gonna happen...lol

IMHO, BMW hasn't made anything interesting since the E39 M5. Most people buy Bimmers for the badge and the badge alone. Once BMW expanded its leasing program, any Tom, Dick, and Jane could now own/lease one without actually understanding why they were the "Ultimate Driving Machine".

Qmx323 09-20-2010 11:03 AM

as much as it does suck, sales are probably not going to drop by a noticeable amount, as the above poster said most people buy BMW for the brand and not for the experience

I honestly don't think most people would care. Many think a C-class is FWD, that's how uninformed the average driver is.

All manufacturers make these decisions at some point. Mercedes decided to go away from I4s cause people liked the bigger V6s, although I'm sure there were some who wanted to keep the fuel efficient I4s. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Mazda, Ford, ... all kept the smaller models of cars away from Canada cause they didn't think they'd sell in a country where trucks and larger sedans lead sales.

q0192837465 09-20-2010 02:57 PM

I'm still amazed at the number of people out there who associate AWD with safe and RWD as dangerous.

Phat_R 09-20-2010 03:11 PM

This sucks!

I realize Vancouver is not the center of the universe and that it snows everywhere else -- but I don't like this decision. Bye bye 50/50 weight distribution, steering feel and fuel consumption. Hello understeer, more weight and more things to break.

:swear:

word, I just spent 4 years in calgary enjoying their winters. you'd think living in calgary would make people good at driving in adverse conditions, but honestly, the first day of snow is probably as bad as it is here in vancouver accident wise. I can't say for certain though cause I haven't experienced one yet.
