BMW Canada phasing out RWD

"The days of rear-wheel-drive BMWs in Canada may be numbered, BMW Canada president and CEO Franz Jung says, because Canadian buyers – even performance-minded BMW customers – simply see rear-drive as too much of a negative in the winter."
“Our aim is not to bring any rear-wheel-drive cars to Canada anymore”

I hope this asshat is talking out of turn and gets fired asap; unless BMW is seriously revamping their Xdrive system, so long to the Ultimate Driving Machine...
I know most people who buy BMW's aren't buying them for the drive anyways, but it's sad that soon it will be impossible to get a RWD+manual BMW in Canada

The c-lai's won't even notice a difference.

tofu1413 09-19-2010 03:02 AM

suddenly, we wont see any Bmw's besides the X5 and X6.

i bet the guys on canadian bmw forums are already summoning their beat down crew..

CanadaGoose 09-19-2010 03:21 AM

Woop dee doo. Don't bring them into Canada then.

Audi will bend them over and butt hump them into oblivion.

StylinRed 09-19-2010 04:48 AM

sounds like one of the dumbest things a car company ever thought of (dumber than the Aztek)

but im an audi fan more than a bmw so YAH Great Decision!

68style 09-19-2010 07:13 AM

What do they plan to do with cars that don't have X-Drive options like the M cars and Z4, etc....... I doubt they will offer X-Drive on all of them down the road... especially with a manual transmission... most companies default you to automatic when you check off the AWD box.

donjalapeno 09-19-2010 08:19 AM

Wow this fucked my morning nicely.

0112358 09-19-2010 08:24 AM

bad decision

afterall rwd+snow isn't too bad as long as you have good tires

I think you guys are taking their press release a little too seriously. I'm willing to bet they are talking about the flagship 3-series and 5-series cause these are the best sellers, for people who just want to commute, and they are recognizing people want FWD or AWD to commute. The enthusiast cars that sell in more limited numbers will still be RWD.

slammer111 09-19-2010 09:46 AM

Most girls I know (including my mother and sister) want/like AWD as well. Something about "feeling secure" while driving.

To be honest, I was hoping my car had an AWD option too. It's useless in heavy snow. :(

Delerious 09-19-2010 10:06 AM

Having awd in snow, or fwd, will do nothing to save your ass when you're going around a corner too fast, trying to stop at an icy intersection, or trying to make your way down an icy slope.

People rely far too much on their car's drive system to save them in an emergency situation, when in reality your fancy awd system won't do shit to slow you down when you're in a 4 wheel skid because you took a corner way too fast. Inexperience and ignorance are the two major factors that cause accidents in adverse weather conditions. Not to mention all of the people that just slap on all season tires onto their 4x4 because they think that's all they need.

In vancouver I can totally understand people not wanting to fork out for winters, but for christ sake, stay the fuck home if it snows, for all our sakes.

I wish there was a fail button for bmw, I'd be spamming it right now if I could. One of the reasons I would buy a bmw is because it's rwd... Now they're thinking of taking that away? I'd no longer have any desire to own a new one then.

5ive0 09-19-2010 10:13 AM

SERIOUSLY??? Thats the worst automotive news ive heard in ages.

I find the intentional yet infrequent fishtail very therapeutic...

vexor 09-19-2010 10:18 AM

Just switch to Mercedes, they'll still have the RWD AMG versions

CorneringArtist 09-19-2010 10:20 AM

Pretty stupid if they don't go back on this decision. It'll just drive the price of used and existing new RWD BMW's way up.

bigzz786786 09-19-2010 10:27 AM

i think they are doing this because in winter time there are a lot of accidents bc(duh), and in vancouver area most of those accidents involve a bmw, but bmw's are the most luxury owned car in bc, what do they expect? just because you buy a bmw doesn't mean your good at driving

Mugen EvOlutioN 09-19-2010 10:29 AM

perfect opportunity for them to introduce x-drive? lol

hk20000 09-19-2010 10:56 AM

^ what do you mean introduce it's been around the block for some time now...

Mugen EvOlutioN 09-19-2010 11:00 AM

i know but now the sales man can push even more x-drive if they going to withdraw all the RWD, and possibly bring in some FWD bmw? which sounds weird but what they going to do if they withdraw RWD? unless every single vehicle going to be X-Drive than thats a different story.

I guess introduce isnt the best word, advertise i should say

Leopold Stotch 09-19-2010 11:08 AM

i think half the people in this thread are reading this wrong,

it's not that they're removing the cars with RWD, they're not having it as an option so everything will have the x drive.

but the point about the M's and Z4 makes sense, what're they going to do about thos models? i hope they just leave it in.

also, i think i would give up my rwd for AWD, if my car had 50 more HP :D

Mugen EvOlutioN 09-19-2010 11:10 AM

^

isnt that the same as removing it for canada market?

since everything will be AWD

jaemc 09-19-2010 11:11 AM

Just throwing it out there for Audi fans. BMW should make commercials like for their x-drive in Vancouver!
