Android 101

Hey

So I've grown quite bored with my Blackberry, especially since I don't plan to stay working in the field of business in a few more months. I was looking to switch to either an iphone or an Android. I can't decide on which model to get.

I've always known bout the iphone's capabilities and all the jail-breaking abilities on that phone. So I'm just wondering, can you do that on an android phone?

Also, there are ways to get apps for free on an iphone even though you are suppose to pay for them, can you crack the droid like that too?

From my readings online, it just keep comparing to the iphone in terms of browsing and apps available on the phone and that it can sync with gmail and stuff. But there's not much info on the darker, more juicer side of the droid.

I just want to get more info before i decide weither i want an Iphone or an Android.

Thanks

You can get any app for android. I find all mine online and have yet to pay for one.

Widgets ftw. One thing iPhone will never have.

That pretty much sums up the thread.

To give yourself a fair chance you have to go out and own an iPhone to truly appreciate what Android can give you.

Otherwise if you go out and get an Android, you'll always be wondering what you were missing with an iPhone and you might even do the opposite of what threezero offered as a solution.

Hhmmm, well I'm gonna get a free itouch 3G from work soon, so I guess I could jailbreak it and try it out.

I heard that the Android is more complicated than the iphone. Where the apps aren't built for all models since the droid comes in so many sizes and types (touch, trackball, etc).

How do you guys feel about this?

dude everything is more complicated than the iphone

iphone is built for the masses
use it straight outta the box.

not to say it's for dumbasses, but it is. haha!

android is like linux. the concept anyways. open source.

I'm probably just buy the phone straight up from distributor. Or if I get an iphone, buy it from the website and wait a few weeks. I never like buying phones locked to a carrier

Btw is it possible to remove apps that carriers try to stuff onto your droid or iphone? I get all these stupid app on my blackberry from Bell that would hog some of my ram

if you can find a nexusone..get that..

seems you can do a bit more on the nexus one...plus theres more developers working on the N1..

What would be awesome is if the guys can get the DesireHD rom ported over to the galaxyS

The DesireHD rom has been ported over to the HD2, the NexusOne port is work in progress still

HHHhhmmmm, so I've been playing with the itouch the last few days, it's a fun phone, but I don't really like the program that I've used to jailbreak my phone. It lacks previews and it seems like apple really limits how creative you can be with your phone. Also, the touch screen seems way too sensitive and goes ahead with whatever link you accidentally slide across.

I don't mind the touch keyboard, but I'm so use to my qwerty keyboard

^Wait for the Desire Z, it's a sexy phone. If you're fine with no hardware keyboard, then I agree with Darthchilli - get a Nexus One. I've worked on Nexus Ones, lots of developer support for that phone specifically, lots of accessories too. Or if you wanna get one on contract, the HTC Desire on Telus is pretty much the same thing. Just loaded CM6 on a friend's Nexus One, froyo is teh sex.

Rooting is easy, loading roms is easy, there's lots of support for pretty much every phone model. If you're not good with computers then have someone else do it for you, but it's pretty foolproof and after rooting, switching roms can be done so easily.

One thing, if you're bringing a phone onto Rogers, SMS timestamps get borked, lol. Some roms have the fix included, some don't. YMMV.

The timestamp issue is easily fixed. Just install SMS Time Stamp Fix from market. It's free and works.

The Desire Z aka Tmobile G2 will only work on Wind for 3G

Qwerty, nuff said :P And even though benchmarks don't always translate to real-world performance, it's got some great results, from what I've read.

And surely they'll release a variant with 850/1900 WCDMA... at least I hope so. It's one damn sexy phone.

Possibly. But will probably be awhile since Tmobile probably has exclusive rights for awhile.

So after some more considerations, I decided not to get an iphone. The restrictions even cracked on my itouch bugged the hell out of me. And even though the games are better, I feel there are other options out there.

So I'm gonna be looking for an android based phone. The question becomes which one?

So far the only one I've really read much about is the Galaxy S. I dunno bout the Nexus that darthchilli suggested. It seems like they're both 1ghz phones

The Galaxy has a super AMOLED 4" screen and a better camera. The Nexus is easier to root and will get updates sooner. Given Samsung's promised android 2 on the behold only to take back that promise may be a factor as well

If it were me, I'd go with the Nexus partly because HTC has a proven track record and there are benefits for getting a google phone
Snipped from another forum. If you don't like Samsung's touchwiz interface, then just buy launcherpro from market Really can't go wrong with either, though.

Hardware: Galaxy s > nexus one

galaxy s has hummingbird processor which performs significantly better on the GPU side, snappier in the overall OS as well. also has 4 inch super amoled

Software: Nexus one > galaxy s

Much better support from devs, more roms to download and try. Overall a much better experience from using the nexus one if u dont need the bigger, badder screen.
