__Quick ICBC Write Off Question__

October 2009

My buddy hit a real old Volvo on the side.
It happened during one of those stop signs with cars parked on your left and ur right blocking your view to foresee incoming cars.

So he hit him. They agreed to go with Cash and not ICBC.

Somehow the Volvo driver changed his mind and went with ICBC.

The Volvo is a 89 - 92 ranged wagon.

Eventually, ICBC told my friend to pay off the full amount of the $1500.

I just received a call today after almost an year.

The Volvo owner gave the car to the salvage yard, and they give him $600 for metals n junk. Now ICBC said that the insurer must pay for this $600.

Can anyone tell me that whether if this is reasonable or logical...?

I am not familiar with Salvage yard pricings. I only know that if you bring your car to car heaven, they give you about $100 for it..

thanks

Ugh, why do people do "cash deals" and not deal with icbc. I reamed out my Ex the other day because she hit someone and said they were going to deal with cash.

flagella 09-28-2010 12:53 PM

So it doesn't show up on the record and will not affect the insurance? Also it's a PITA to deal with ICBC sometimes.

:troll:

lol take into account how much your insurance would go up if you don't pay the $600

Phil@rise 09-28-2010 03:03 PM

$600 is way cheaper then the rise in insurance rates and its way cheaper then the $1500 it was originally supposed to cost him.
The only time you only walk away with $100 or so bucks from a scrapper for a car is when its a small jap import and its towed in. Driven in cars always get more.

pay the 6

miky 09-28-2010 10:32 PM

hmmm.......

I highly doubt that the junk yard gave the guy $600 bucks and smash it into a cube..

If they were to part it, even tho older car are stronger plus it's a volvo.. but I don't see how it can be $600 bucks.

If they took it into a dealership.. I would say they'll give them $300 bucks max..

Have anyone took their car to the Salvage yard and got $600 bucks or more??

miky 09-28-2010 10:45 PM

OK, so the Volvo owner took their car to the salvage yard is becuz the fact that it's a total loss or not worth fixing it.

But the fact is: It's not a total loss, and my friend gave $1500 to let them fix it.

So during these 11 months.. they used the $1500 to fix their car, or maybe they didn't fix their car... and Now, they either drove it or tolled it to the yard for $600 bucks?

How is it that this $600 at my friends cost when his paid his dues?

Can someone please explain it to me that the insurer has to pay for the salvage yard cost?

godwin 09-28-2010 11:48 PM

You got scammed plain and simple. The $1500 has been pissed away. ICBC doesn't know nor care about what you pay under the table. To them only what is on their claim list count. You paid the Volvo owner not to go to ICBC and they reneged on the deal. It is NOT ICBC's problem!

Tell your "friend" it is a lesson learned, always go through ICBC.

As for the $600, most of the salvage yard do things for free when people walk off the street, but when it comes to corporation they have to charge by the book.. hence $600 is what it cost them to get rid off the car. Think about it as analogous to the price difference between a normal non claim paint job vs a ICBC claim.

This is not the case.

ICBC sent my friend the statement to pay for $1500 which was the full amount. Done deal

11 months later, they brought the car to the junk yard. Now my friend needs to pay for it.

Qmx323 09-29-2010 12:20 AM

wait what?

ICBC orders your frd to pay 1500. Then asks ur frd to pay another 600 to icbc after the owner of the Volvo basically "sells" his car for said amount to a junker?

so the junker is asking icbc for $600 because they are junking it and ICBC somehow comes to the conclusion of making ur frd pay that $600

This is exactly what happened.

The rep told me that the insurer is responsible for the salvage cost!

my head is full of fuk too.....

Qmx323 09-29-2010 12:38 AM

I'm guessing what happened was that the Volvo guy told the junker the reason why he was junking it, then they told ICBC so ICBC goes after ur friend now

Still pretty dumb

wtf, i assume the second you pay the full 1500 you should not be responsible for any future costs.

Who is this rep?

This is how its suposed to work isn't it??

If the case was not closed, is it true that you can't even purchaes new insurance? My friend had his insurance renewed like May 2010.

It's the ICBC rep/employee/cold caller

I would check with ICBC again, perhaps somehow the rep is unaware that your friend had paid the original 1500 11 months ago. Unless this is ICBC policy and that is pretty messed up.

Oh shit your buddy gave them 1500 bucks to fix it already! I missed that part he's getting screwed then.

Wait until ICBC sends your friend a written letter in the mail. It sounds like someone is bad at their job over there, and when they write it down they'll figure out they messed up.

Also, I think you can still purchase insurance with a claim in process, but they will charge the premiums if you don't pay off the amount.

GabAlmighty 10-02-2010 05:50 PM

Well, your friend deserves everything he's getting. He sent a perfectly good (going to assume here) 240 wagon to the scraper.

If it was a 740 then good riddance.

Either way, I don't feel bad for your friend. Hitting a redblock is inexcusable.
