My dog got skunked before took 3 showers and lots of walks to get the smell off. You have to clean/wash/rinse the area that have skunked assuming it was at home or your dog will sniff and roll around in it.
quick search and i came across this hope it helps http://dan.drydog.com/patsyann/skunk.html |

you can go to some of the vet clinics and they have special shampoo for it. it is a tiny bottle and quite expensive but it works. my dog got skunked years ago and we bought it and it got rid of the smell pretty fast.

the tomato sauce is messy and a waste of time.
just go to the pet store and buy a shampoo that's meant for skunk spray. there are lots to choose. most work pretty good but you may have to apply two or three times in order to make sure it all gets washed off.

There will be a residual smell for about 2 weeks. Hope your dog isn't too traumatized, although I think the owners are more traumatized than she is. Haha...

I had it happen to my dog a while back and let me tell you the tomato juice/sauce mixed in with wet dog smell is absolutely disgusting. I nearly puked after that but then again I even hate the smell of V8 tomato juice.

According to Mythbusters, Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + liquid dish soap worked better than commercial skunk detergent. But I'm not sure how dog hair would cope with the first ingredient
Tomato juice worked as well, but not as good as that combo

Personally I'd choose the shampoo. The chemicals in the shampoo will react with the skunk spray and neutralize the odour-- something the tomato sauce doesn't do.

Tomato juice DOES neutralize the odor, that's the whole point of using it. If it was just masking the odor, it wouldn't really be the home remedy everyone knows about.
I'm sure the shampoo works better, but in a pinch if you have it at home it would be a good idea to use it first before heading out to the pet store
I bet oxyclean would work well too, but again it probably wouldn't be good for the dog's hair unfortunately

Well the research I did seems to say otherwise regarding the tomato juice. Personally I'd believe this guy, a Chemistry professor who has dedicated a portion of his research to the topic. http://users.humboldt.edu/wfwood/deodorize.shtml |

Hydro peroxide and baking soda combo works great thing is you gotta hit the dog with it right away if the skunk juice dries then it's gonna be really hard to get off.
