| Mixing tires a taboo, any alternatives?
I know this isn't the right area, but I need help quick
I know it's a taboo to mix tires for a car, but I just want to know why and if there's any exception.
Situation:
Switched 2 tires on rear because the left rear tire was pierced with a nail. Fast forward to a year, same thing happened again!
So right now, I have company A tire on front, company B tire on rear, and 1 tire from company A from the rear that wasn't pierced from last year.
Right now, I really don't want to spend another couple of hundreds of dollars to get a new set of tire for the rear. If I do, that means I would have two good tires from 2 different company, and I can't really do anything with them.
What's the worse that can happen if I replaced my current company B pierced tire, with the good company A tire that I have left?
Or is there any other more affordable way to replace the tire? I checked with tire shops and they said that the tire is no good.

Slower by how much? If I drive within city speed limit would that be ok?
I know it's a general question, but I've never dealt with this problem before, so I don't know how to approach it.
I've read that at least speed rating and tread direction should match.
Unfortunately, tire wear will definitely be different, so I don't know if that alone is a good reason why I shouldn't mix the tires.

What car is this?
As long as the tires are of the same tread design it isn't TOO bad. The equivalent tread depth (tire wear) is important when putting them on the same axle. And yes that is enough of a reason to not mix the tires.
-If put on the front it could pull to one side/slip to one side.
-If put on certain transmission especially ones with certain traction control the car thinks your car is slipping (less tread depth will end up giving a smaller tire diameter) and cause stress and at worse cause damage.
The main reason you're not suppose to mix tires is because it affects the handling at a certain point.
But think about this, if you can put a spare tire on and it's a donut and it's rated at 80km/h, then I'm sure you can drive at least that for a mismatched normal sized tire. (to answer your question about what speed)
At the end of the day you SHOULD replace them as a pair. Then again I've seen tons of people with mismatched tires driving into my shop...

AWD cars are a no no to have mismatched tires, least the volvo's are.
And ya, replace as a pair if you can. If you can't, don't complain if your car doesn' act or perform correctly.

He's FWD, so he's fine.
Just keep the same tires on each axle.

If you can't afford to maintain your car in a reasonably safe state, consider transit as an alternative.

I mix my winter tires front rear. never left right though, I cant imagine that to be fun.
Works fine on my fwd. (for the haters, I have ws60 rear ws70 front)
I might even do it on my summer set soon.
edit: buy tires from discount tire in bellingham, I havent found tires up here @ stealership cost, to even rival those prices.

I have 3 different tire brands on my car (came that way when I bought my rims) for the last 2 years, no problem. Just don't drive like a douche. It's not like your car will suddenly lose all traction just because they're mismatched.
If you're cheap like me, just keep going until it's replacement time, then change out the whole axle. If one tire is still good, keep it around as a spare. |

While you may want to replace only 1 tire , certain tire shops won't even do it for you. They will make you replace 2 at a time. Just a heads up. Posted via RS Mobile |

Were the tires pierced in such a way that you could not have them patched?
