2010 GTI VS...? Alternatives?

I'm not buying it. My friend is.

He went to the VW dealership, and he was given a quote for $41K. Fully loaded. All the bells and whistles.

I tried to convince him to get the WRX, but he doesn't want to drive a Standard car.
He plans to pay for the car in full, but he's wondering how much he can get off the sticker price.

I'm thinking about finding alternatives, but he seems pretty set on the GTI. Would an A3 be better? the price is similar, but will be quite a bit more on the Audi.

He needs something with 4 Doors, Automatic.
We looked at the Lancer Ralliart, but the salesmen weren't willing to move on the price. I've been trying to convince him to learn how to drive Standard, but no luck. Otherwise, he would've gotten the WRX by now.

So, how much should he be paying for one?
Or if you know someone who's bought one, how much did you pay for your:
- Lancer Ralliart
- GTI 5 Door.

Does he need a new car? For 40k, you can probably get a pre-owned 335 sedan or S4.

Forgot to mention that.

New only. He's been driving the same car for 15 years. He wants something new.

But I've been trying to convince him to get something cool. Like an M3. hah

41k LOL what a joke..for the kinda money i wouldn't be buying a freaken gti

Ichi 10-12-2010 04:15 PM

GTI is a good car but NOT for $41k. For that price you can buy so much more.

G37, A4, 3 series, etc.....

littledog 10-12-2010 04:24 PM

If your friend wants to buy a GTI, why are you trying to convince him to buy something else?

SpuGen 10-12-2010 04:26 PM

It's $41K for a Golf.
A fully loaded GTI, but still a Golf.

Which is why I'm asking people how much he can get off on the price.

And yet, there's still a 3 month wait for one. Retarded.

ws6ta 10-12-2010 04:30 PM

41k is way too much for a gti. tell him to buy my vette instead :D :D

If he does want a GTI type car why not look at a r32 in the states? Get one for around 25k and guaranteed to have more fun then the 2010 gti.

gilly 10-12-2010 04:33 PM

dang...10k in options? gti starts at around 29G doesn't it?

Jgresch 10-12-2010 04:35 PM

Lol @ your friend not buying the Mitsubishi cuz they wouldn't move on price... You realize there's only about 1100$ in mark up? Your friend should base his car buying off what car suits his needs and budget, not what car he can get the best discount on...

He doesn't want to go through the hassle of buying from the states.

Been trying to convince him to get one from the states though...
He likes the IS250 AWD, but it's too pricey.

If only...

The fact that it's slow doesn't help.
Who wants to pay full sticker price for thier new car? I sure as hell don't.
Unless I REALLY wanted it, and there was no chance in hell I would get any off.

ruthless 10-12-2010 04:49 PM

don't think you'll be getting much off since you say there's a 3 month wait for them...

trd2343 10-12-2010 04:52 PM

If your friend wanted a fully loaded GTI in the first place, he would've gone for a fully loaded A3 or at least similarly equipped. If he didn't care, he won't have gone for a fully loaded GTI in the first place.

A base automatic A3 starts at $33k, and that doesn't even include bi-xenon lights.

dinamix 10-12-2010 04:55 PM

41k for a depreciating asset. go buy a 10grand car and put your money in a fucking house.

chris walter 10-12-2010 05:03 PM

You say he's paying in full? Dealerships like this. You should be able to get a better deal if the salesman knows.

Or how about mazdaspeed 3? Only problem is it doesn't come in automatic. $34 k. Before tax

iirc I've tried to talked to mitsu and got about 3k lower from sticker at new type... that's cash buy, today and if recent grad, there's another incentive iirc... try a few mitsu dealers, most of them don't move around, but still, so far I've got 2 dealers to move for 3k or so.

too_slow 10-12-2010 05:18 PM

Is $41k OTD???? You should be able to get at least $1000 off if you were to pay by cash for the car.

Mugen EvOlutioN 10-12-2010 05:36 PM

ughh...

why are u trying to convince ur friend to get a m3

when he is looking at a 40k car, while m3 costs double

why dont u tell him to get a 458 while u are at it

:rolleyes::bullshit:

bigzz786786 10-12-2010 05:46 PM

just get a g37 sedan

Ikkaku 10-12-2010 05:48 PM

If the guy is pretty much set on getting the gti at 41k, let him do it, it's his money and his car.

I hate people that keep bombarding me with options when I'm dead set on something.

J-Chow 10-12-2010 05:50 PM

$41k is definately way too expensive for a VW GTI. Don't know why GTI's are overpriced but that's life.

I would suggest taking a look at the new Hyundai Sonata. Exterior looks baller, and interior is actually on par with a few European vehicles, and it's not AS expensive.
Plus, it has 4 doors and automatic transmission lol

Mugen EvOlutioN 10-12-2010 05:52 PM

ugh why go korean when you can get a G37 sedan for around $40-45g
