Where's the best place to get some sushi grade tuna and salmon? I want to try making my own poke

I usually just order take-out sashimi from a sushi joint and use that. Easier (and sometimes cheaper) than sourcing slabs of sushi grade fish.

Also this is an interesting article I came across recently about 'sushi' or 'sashimi grade' fish (spoiler: it's all marketing)

What Is "Sushi-Grade," Anyway? A Guide to Eating Raw Fish at Home | Serious Eats

Quote:

Officially, the terms "sashimi-grade" and "sushi-grade" mean precisely nothing. Yuji Haraguchi, owner of the Brooklyn-based Osakana, a fish shop specializing in sashimi, recalls using them for marketing purposes when he worked as a sales representative for wholesale fish distributor True World Foods. Back in 2004, the company was trying to expand its customer base beyond Japanese restaurants, and Haraguchi's mission was to convince other restaurants to serve their customers raw fish besides tuna.

It's been asked twice in this thread, but no definitive answer was given.

Where can I get JUST clay bars locally, not the overpriced $40/$50 clay bar kits that crappy tire sells?

bobbinka 05-24-2017 12:58 PM

amazon?

Amazon is in Richmond so technically that's local as well lol

Not local in Vancouver, but they're Canadian - eShine

There used to be a member on this forum based out of Maple Ridge - Ken (911fanatic) - who sold detailing products. Not sure if he does anymore but maybe look up his old posts to find his shop?

MG1 05-24-2017 05:18 PM

I don't think he sells products anymore....................

Fujiya

............................or Yamato Trading, which is like two blocks away. They are wholesale, but also sell to the public. Their white albacore tuna come whole, quartered, or ready to go. All frozen like they're supposed to be. I'm not 100% sure about the availability of salmon, but the owners have ties to the local fishing community (Campbell River), so I imagine they do. These people are importers and supply the local restaurants and other retailers with Japanese food and sundries.

1050 Parker Street
Tel: 604-253-5022

Not open Sunday and have limited hours, so phone first. They are not full retail, so don't go in there all Fobby. Be cool and expect slow service. Their customer base, other than wholesale, is the local Japanese community.

I saw a booth in Metrotown near BR on Monday that had a huge line up for fidget spinners.

Kind of a weird one.

Where can I get a large thank you card? Like one that is 3'x2' or something similar?

fliptuner 05-29-2017 10:06 PM

Hallmark or Dollarama?

Night market has several booths selling them. Various prices for different styles. I think the standard one is around $9.
There is a Groupon for that with local pick up in Richmond.

Online is fine, but I need to find 5/8" x 4" (or whatever the metric equivalent is) carriage or shaker bolts, grade 8 or higher. So far I've tried BC Fastener, Lakeside Fastener, Marathon Fastener, Acklands Grainger and General Fastener with no luck.

MG1 06-02-2017 05:39 PM

I was going to suggest Steveston Marine, but I don't think they carry grade 8.

underscore 06-02-2017 05:42 PM

^ they only ship to the US :(

68style 06-02-2017 05:44 PM

^ Just send it to Point Roberts or Blaine

MG1 06-02-2017 05:56 PM

Have you tried Fastenal? They have warehouses all across the Americas. They will bring it up here if it is available.

underscore 06-02-2017 07:55 PM

I'm in Kelowna, that's a bit of a drive for 8 bolts. Fastenal is a wholesaler only, they won't sell to me.

BIC_BAWS 06-02-2017 08:15 PM

A google search found me three Fastenals in the Lower Mainland:
Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby
